Im going to the apple store tomorrow.

So, quick question to the owners of the new macbook pro 17" 2009.

Is it still freezing (like late 2008 MBP) when you take a screenshot, using battery only and the Nvidia 9600 ??????

If you own a brand new MBP 17" please do this:

1.- Go to system preferences, and then to energy settings and switch to high permormace battery AKA Nvidia 9600

2.- Disconnect the AC adapter cable on your computer (THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT)

3.- Press ⌘ Shift 3 (command **** 3 ALL 3 keys AT THE SAME TIME)

4.- Check if inmediatly after you took the screenshot, you can open, for example Finder, or try to open Safari or whatever you want, the point here is to check if your computer freezes like most Late 2008 does .

Please post your results here.

Wow, I was hoping to prove you wrong but it froze. I don't think this would effect my decision to purchase this great computer but this is a bug they should fix.

10.5.7 would be my guess

I'm tempted to try it...let me see if it's one of the fixed.

Edit: Nope, nothing in the release notes for anything to do with the video at all.

I also notice that in photobooth when u use the background image effects like the eifel tower or roller coaster, its all choppy and useless. Background mixes all up. Any ideas on that?

Just tried that on my Unibody 17 (while running a bunch of apps, including Serato's Scratch Live/Video-SL while playing videos):

No freeze here, either while running from AC or the battery, and the screenshots seem normal as well.

me too. It took about 30 seconds to be unstuck where it was like the computer caught up with the keyboard shortcuts I was trying while it was stuck,

My 17" 2.66 froze as well- I closed the lid, let it go to sleep, and once I woke it up it was un-froze. A good thing to know if you set forth with this little experiment- how to avoid having to hard-reset.

Mine doesn't exactly freeze. I can move the mouse, just can't click on anything. After a few seconds the screenshot pops up on my desktop and everything is back to normal, it just takes ~10 seconds for that to happen.

Mine got stuck too until I plug the power back on and it worked instantly right again.

Hopefully 10.5.7 will address this.

Today I went to the Apple store and realized that they already update the 17" model of MBP..

I am aware that the new model has a higher color Gamut than the old 17" MBP.. However, I do find that the brightness and color saturation not to be consistent with each 17" model.. There are 3 new 17" MBP in the store and all of them has different brightness (When set at MAX) and the color BLUE would look different on each screen.. I took a comparison with the "Old" 17" MBP and was surprised to find out that its screen actually looks a lot better..

The 15" MBP have a much more consistent brightness and color saturation when compared to the new 17" MBP.. Also, I do find that the brightness in the 15" model is higher than the 17" MBP..

I suggest that anyone who is planning to buy the new 17" MBP should wait until Apple addresses and fix this issue.. Different screen quality across the same product family (17" MBP) is very concerning...

I have my CMD + Shift + 3 combo re-mapped to CMD + 8, when I do that on 9600GT on battery my machine freezes for 2 seconds then the screenshot appears on the desktop. While its frozen I can still move my mouse around and I heard the little Shutter sound.

Looks like a software glitch to me.

Yep - appears to "hang" for about 10-15 sec, then "catch up" (for example, if I had invoked spaces expose). Only on battery - when on a/c, screen shot is instant.

17", 2.66 Unibody.

I have a friend who's a developer and has access to the Snow Leopard betas. He told me that his MBP running Snow Leopard no longer freezes while taking screenshots, so it's definitely just a software bug in 10.5.6.

Just tried it unplugged and pluggen in to AC, and no freeze.
