Just attempted the new update for my MBA, but now all I have is a grey screen with the apple sign on the middle. This has been going on for 2 hours. What was the average length of install? Any ideas what's going on?

Are you talking about the 10.8.5 supplemental update? Once it is downloaded that only takes a few minutes to install. It sounds like your install is hung up. Not much you can do other than hold the power button down until it shuts down then restart.

Afterward, you may want to do a command-r boot to recovery and use Disk Utility to verify the integrity of your disk.

^^^^He may be talking about SMC update 1.9. A couple of members have had issues with that. But, yep, it would be nice if the OP told us what update he was talking about.
