Keep Tiger, Apple is going to release their first update by the end of the month and it will fix a good amount of the bugs. I would keep it because i bet after you install the first update you really won't see any bugs.

i just installed Tiger on my AlBook (erase and install) and have had no problems in regard to stability or anything else. I would definitely not get Panther unless you badly need it because a program you really need won't run on Tiger yet.

Everyone with problems with Tiger:

10.4.1 is being released EARLY and that is because they are working their butts off to help users with bugs. 10.4.1 will fix almost all the issues with Tiger. By 10.4.2, NO issues will be present that were there with the innitial release.

Imagine how advanced 10.4.9 will be!

The root cause of this behavior is one of hardware. Apple includes special hardware enablers with each Mac OS release to support their newest Macs. Without these enablers, the Mac won't boot the Mac OS version you're trying to use. Since Apple ships the new iMac G5 with Tiger, there are bound to be support files specific to the new iMac G5 - these won't be present on Panther, and thus will prevent the machine from booting Panther.

I've now talked to apple myself.

With all due respect, perhaps you are confusing "enablers" with BS detectors?

If you look towards the bottom of page 1 of this thread, you'll see that I got it sorted out with the help of member SteveC. Did you not see these posts before replying?

I understand the point you're trying to make, though.

New iMacs might run 10.3.5 but not 10.3 GM!

Actually, I think it's plausible that later versions of Panther will run on the new iMacs. However, if you buy a retail version of Panther, you might get a Gold Master copy (=v10.3). When the first revision of the iMac G5 was released, we were already at 10.3.5, IIRC. So earlier versions (10.3-10.3.4) most probably won't run on any iMac G5. Therefore you might want an iMac G5 Panther restore DVD. Unless Apple changed the retail discs at some stage during the 18-month run of Panther.

I agree wrldwzrd89. And I think we can put this one to rest now. :p No need to extend the conversation anymore, now that we have an answer. I think that's in everyone's best interest.
