Still no Waze/3rd party nav support? OK, back to Android Auto in my car (though I'm an Apple user).

Thats because they haven't installed an iPad with Waze on it, and they don't know what they're missing without a CarPlay App Store.

I use both on a regular basis. Android auto has better AI on voice commands and of course Google maps. But it's also very slow and finicky to launch each time I'm in the car plus it's sometimes very laggy. CarPlay is much, much more polished and pleasant to use.

My favourite thing about my new bmw ///m2. Siri works 100x better in the car than anywhere else. Only request is more apps, Facebook messenger and Waze to start.

I have a new Honda Accord and I thought I’d use it CarPlay more. If it was wireless, then I would definitely use it more.

I also have a new Honda Accord. We do use CarPlay often, though we do have to plug in the cable to use it. Which makes the wireless charging pad in our Touring completely useless. But I'm glad to have CarPlay. It was pretty much a requirement for us when choosing a new vehicle. That eliminated Toyota from any consideration (though they are finally starting to add it in the newest cars).

CarPlay limits us to Apple Maps, but Apple Maps is steadily improving and works well in our area. I've never been a huge Waze fan but do wish we could use Google Maps. Oh well, I'm sure that will never happen. But CarPlay is 100x better than in-vehicle nav systems of the past. Now, the Garmin-based system in the new Accord is actually quite good (other than the voice recognition part), but I would say the pressure placed on the car industry by CarPlay and Android Auto probably had a lot to do with that.

CarPlay could be better but it's already WAY better than in-car systems we had in older generation vehicles.

Question for you or anyone else who may know. Rentals: Is your CP information persistent after returning the vehicle? I can't tell you how many times I've rented a vehicle and the previous person's BT info is just sitting there. The rental companies don't wipe it. I clear profiles on rentals as a matter of principle. CP/AA work similarly? I would think not since they are just fancy overlays being relayed from the phone, but I dunno.
No, CP is all on the iOS device connected. It just streams the interface/audio/video to the car’s screen and the touch commands back. Nothing leaves the iOS device. Simply unplug it and it’s like it was never connected.

Carplay is oberrated already. The system should be this:

- airplay screen, doubling your phone screen
- touch sensitive

No separate OS, let the mobile device do the processor work, as a car lives longer than a phone. Latest phone with my concept? Then you have the latest experience.

These mobile processors are getting so powerful, that there is a lot of sense in my vision no? The most sense is made in the fact that at the longest extend, apps will need to be allowed or not allowed to be mirrored. I mean, the point being it should not replace a phone, but have the maximum available car relevant functionality, most of all: allowing us to use Waze or other nav apps.

Moreover, The driver integrity is guaranteed in thus way, which will more and more be a matter pf concern like the previous poster is alluding.
With car sharing becoming the future, CarPlay already is too old fashioned for my taste.
That’s how CarPlay works. It’s all on the iOS device. The only thing being processed but the car’s unit is touch inputs and any audio coming through. Get a fast iPhone and you’re experience is quicker.

Apple maps has worked fine for me since I first used it in ~2013. I wonder where everyone lives that says it sucks other than outside the US.

Get a better Android phone. Android Auto is laggy due to the weak hardware on the phone.

I think you may be misunderstanding what CarPlay is. The mobile processor does all the work. CarPlay is an overlay running from your mobile device.
Duh!

And another Duh :)

Oh sorry... I only y knew CP from real life experience, I didn’t know how it is different from let’s say Bluetooth functions offered by the car computer.

Okay, that is rather interesting, and kind of cool that I got the idea that I didn’t get it, haha.

But you got to admit that the interface is altered in such a way that’s giving you the impression that your device is not the same, if you are acting like simple Joe Not Techsavvy? Also, it is stripping your experience to Apple only, with the exception of Spotify, if I am not forgetting another one.

Is support for using an app in the Carplay UI a developer engagement, or is it in co-op with Apple then? Are we to be optimistic about it maturing to a full blown relevant and user oriented experience? I mean, oriented in the way of it becoming a UI that will evolve to a higher satisfaction then we have already?

I’ve tried both. Android Auto is so clunky... the UI is a complete and utter fail. I wouldn’t recommend AA to my worst enemies

Recently had my entire car audio system upgraded as I had nothing for integration other than a mini jack. The headunit I selected is CarPlay (and AndroidAuto) enabled. It’s handy, but not terribly well integrated into the overall headunit. There are basically two menus, CarPlay and the main system. Going to something not CarPlay, like listening to the radio, isn’t as seamless as it should be. Also I have two phones. If my iPhone is connected to USB for CarPlay I can’t use my other phone with the headunit’s Bluetooth. Kind of annoying. And yes, I really want Waze to work with CarPlay.

Apple Maps is good enough now days that lack of Waze isn’t anything to make me want to not use it. A couple years ago I would have given a different answer, but now all map apps are about 99 percent similar in accuracy.

Lots of positive comments over here, looks like I might be the only one having troubles?
On a Mustang 2017, "Sync3" dash, it worked perfectly fine for my needs. Yes, Google Maps is still better, yes have to plug a cable... but getting better and better, UNTIL iOS11 came out:

Launch Siri, "Get directions to home", between 1 to 5mins later... "I'm sorry, try again later" or similar.
Launch Siri, "Call John Doe".... 30 seconds to 2mins later... nothing, it just goes back to Maps or wherever it was.
Suppose now, we are on Maps, tap the Music icon... 30+ seconds later, it goes to Music, then maybe crashes/springs or maybe crashes when going back to Maps.
But hey, feeling lucky, "Call John Doe", it actually registers it, mutes the music... hey a call is about to happen!... 30seconds later without music guessing what the hell is happening, the call would probably finally trigger.
WHAT THE ACTUAL F...
I guess since iOS 11, CarPlay has to download the whole internet for every tiny action or something... frustrating as hell.

Anybody else having similar issues?

Please. I recently switched from my beloved iPhone to Android just to get rid of Siri in the car and use Android Auto. This article isn't even close to reality.

CarPlay is garbage. There are so many aftermarket head units out there running Android that makes CarPlay look and feel amateur. I have this 12 inch head unit running full Android.

I still think there's a way to go with Apple CarPlay. Those who have used Waze a few times will know that you cannot return to Apple Maps.
There was an interesting test someone ran a few months ago comparing directions of Waze, Apple Maps and Google Maps and found that Waze, while giving shorter direction times actually ended up being not much faster than Apple Maps. Also, the writer posited the theory that a service like Waze might even want the driver to believe they are getting directions that appear more efficient, only to keep the user exposed to more ads. Not saying Waze isn't a good service, but there's something to be said - follow the money.

Or just use Android Auto.
[doublepost=1523571769][/doublepost]Google Assistant can find all sort of information on the web and read it to me. I can ask it to translate to other languages, can have it spell words, find stock quotes, do math, etc. Every day I find something new it can do, so you can actually learn something new while driving.
This sounds a little ridiculous - unless you've got an autonomous car, some of this is too much for a driver. As for Google Maps - it is indeed better than Apple Maps, but every so often - which in my view is one out of three times, I'll be stuck in a slow traffic, I'll look at Google Maps and wonder why isn't it red, or why didn't it re-route me? This is what sucks about these navigation services - they promise you everything, but when it doesn't pull through you're stuck in traffic, shaking your head in awe.

Edit: You've gotta be kidding me - now THAT looks friggin dangerous.

Now I just need Mazda to fulfil their promise of compatibility with CarPlay. It’s not #1 on my list of things in life but it would be nice to finally have it.

I have CarPlay on my Honda. I'm disappointed with how many characters are shown when you're listening to music through Apple music; many song titles, artists, or albums are truncated. I also don't like how the album art is faded in the background and difficult to see.
