I want to retrofit a 00's car to do use Apple CarPlay - looks impossible.
I have a new Honda Accord and I thought I’d use it CarPlay more. If it was wireless, then I would definitely use it more.
No, CP is all on the iOS device connected. It just streams the interface/audio/video to the car’s screen and the touch commands back. Nothing leaves the iOS device. Simply unplug it and it’s like it was never connected.Question for you or anyone else who may know. Rentals: Is your CP information persistent after returning the vehicle? I can't tell you how many times I've rented a vehicle and the previous person's BT info is just sitting there. The rental companies don't wipe it. I clear profiles on rentals as a matter of principle. CP/AA work similarly? I would think not since they are just fancy overlays being relayed from the phone, but I dunno.
That’s how CarPlay works. It’s all on the iOS device. The only thing being processed but the car’s unit is touch inputs and any audio coming through. Get a fast iPhone and you’re experience is quicker.Carplay is oberrated already. The system should be this:
- airplay screen, doubling your phone screen
- touch sensitive
No separate OS, let the mobile device do the processor work, as a car lives longer than a phone. Latest phone with my concept? Then you have the latest experience.
These mobile processors are getting so powerful, that there is a lot of sense in my vision no? The most sense is made in the fact that at the longest extend, apps will need to be allowed or not allowed to be mirrored. I mean, the point being it should not replace a phone, but have the maximum available car relevant functionality, most of all: allowing us to use Waze or other nav apps.
Moreover, The driver integrity is guaranteed in thus way, which will more and more be a matter pf concern like the previous poster is alluding.
With car sharing becoming the future, CarPlay already is too old fashioned for my taste.

Get a better Android phone. Android Auto is laggy due to the weak hardware on the phone.I use both on a regular basis. Android auto has better AI on voice commands and of course Google maps. But it's also very slow and finicky to launch each time I'm in the car plus it's sometimes very laggy. CarPlay is much, much more polished and pleasant to use.

Duh!I think you may be misunderstanding what CarPlay is. The mobile processor does all the work. CarPlay is an overlay running from your mobile device.
And another DuhNo, CP is all on the iOS device connected. It just streams the interface/audio/video to the car’s screen and the touch commands back. Nothing leaves the iOS device. Simply unplug it and it’s like it was never connected.

Apple maps has worked fine for me since I first used it in ~2013. I wonder where everyone lives that says it sucks other than outside the US.
There was an interesting test someone ran a few months ago comparing directions of Waze, Apple Maps and Google Maps and found that Waze, while giving shorter direction times actually ended up being not much faster than Apple Maps. Also, the writer posited the theory that a service like Waze might even want the driver to believe they are getting directions that appear more efficient, only to keep the user exposed to more ads. Not saying Waze isn't a good service, but there's something to be said - follow the money.I still think there's a way to go with Apple CarPlay. Those who have used Waze a few times will know that you cannot return to Apple Maps.
This sounds a little ridiculous - unless you've got an autonomous car, some of this is too much for a driver. As for Google Maps - it is indeed better than Apple Maps, but every so often - which in my view is one out of three times, I'll be stuck in a slow traffic, I'll look at Google Maps and wonder why isn't it red, or why didn't it re-route me? This is what sucks about these navigation services - they promise you everything, but when it doesn't pull through you're stuck in traffic, shaking your head in awe.Or just use Android Auto.
[doublepost=1523571769][/doublepost]Google Assistant can find all sort of information on the web and read it to me. I can ask it to translate to other languages, can have it spell words, find stock quotes, do math, etc. Every day I find something new it can do, so you can actually learn something new while driving.
Edit: You've gotta be kidding me - now THAT looks friggin dangerous.CarPlay is garbage. There are so many aftermarket head units out there running Android that makes CarPlay look and feel amateur. I have this 12 inch head unit running full Android.
