icab has a separate set of options that you get to via an icab section in the main Apple settings app. You should find the options that you need there, in particular you can set the home page to be what you want (e.g. Google) and then a couple of lines down there is an option to tell icab what to load on startup (blank page, last session, homepage, etc). If you set that to load your home page on startup then that should get you what you want.

Thanks

How do you import bookmarks from desktop to Icab? I've downloaded the bookmarks.html to dropbox and tried to import from there but I get a 404 error. My web connect is working fine so maybe I"m doing something else wrong?

I have done this with icab and it works fine. Are you sure the file is in the correct dropbox directory as defined in the icab settings? Also, the file name created by icab when exporting is Bookmarks.html. I don't know if the ipad file system is case sensitive, but you might try changing the file name. Have you tried to export bookmarks from icab to dropbox to insure that is working OK.

I just had the Bookmark.html within dropbox, then I realized it needed to be within an Icabmobile folder inside the dropbox folder so I created one and all went well. thanks

The 4.2 update just arrived to a iPad near you.
Love the gestures! But there is one thing I don't really get. QuickStarter, how do I add sites to the QuickStarter? It says it's done in the Action menu, but where is this menu? :/

The "Action" menu is the icon with the arrow next to the Bookmarks menu
click on it and you can add the websites you want to Quickstarter

Only one bug so far - 3 finger DOWN gesture to close tab - if you've only got one tab it clears the existing web page but does not clear the address bar.
If you try and select a bookmark to load it does nothing and sometimes crashes too.

Has anyone noticed how much action there now is under iOS 4.2 as far as iCab's low memory warning bar at the bottom the screen goes?

The way it works is that, if you have the appropriate iCab setting enabled for memory management, iCab will put a coloured bar at the bottom of the screen when it isn't happy about the amount of free meory available: a yellow bar for a mild warning and a red bar for a more serious warning. With 3.2.2 I didn't start seeing warnings until I got to about 4 tabs.

With iOS 4.2.1 I usually get a red warning as soon as I switch to iCab, even if I only have one tab open, but that warning usually goes to a yellow bar within seconds and then disappears. I would guess that what's going on here is that when I switched away from the app that I was using just before iCab (and maybe ones before that as well) then those apps are frozen in memory as part of the iOS multi tasking & state saving feature so that when iCab is re-entered it restarts with only part of the main memory available to it and throws up a warning but, as it continues to run, iOS sees (or maybe iCab explicitly says) that it wants more memory and iOS starts evicting the saved apps from main memory so that the severity of the iCab memory warnings get less and then eventually go away.

I've never had iCab crash on me or refuse to open a new tab because of this, I just think it's quite interesting to see iOS 4.2 memory/process management in action in this way.

You're right on with iOS 4.2 memory management. When you have a web view based app like iCab (or River of News), this level of memory control is completely out of the hands of the developer. The best that non-Apple apps can do is use low level APIs to make some educated guesses as to when memory is going to run out.

Overall, I'd expect you can get more tabs open in 4.2 than you could 3.2. Apple implemented some limited memory swap with the flash memory and the result is the iPad will give an individual app about 50% more headroom than it used to.

Can we all please ask Apple to allow us to select a default browser on the next iPad update.

To do so would be such a tiny tiny change.

The only reason not do to it, I can think is only out of spite and to deliberately make life difficult for people who wish to use a browser with some better features than Safari.

Either upgrade Safari, or allow a change of default browser.

Is that too much to ask?

I too would like to be able to change my default browser, but I understand why Apple doesn't allow that. They want to control the user experience. Internet browsing is one of the most important things that people can do on a tablet, so Apple doesn't want to risk anything.

I faced the iCab's memory issue with 3.2.2 before upgrading to 4.2
it never happened before, but then it started to happen all the time.
I don't understand really why.

I contacted the developer and said that he can't control that because you are free to run whatever you want on the browser and that will kill the low RAM of the iPad.

the funny thing is that I had only 1 tab opened, and it was a text html page. it did crash on me.

Now I use it but keep an eye to keep it within the 1-2 tabs open only

any one still using Safari is missing on the amazing experience of using other browsers

After upgrading to 4.2, I began getting frequent memory warnings with icab, so I just turned that setting off. I am actually able to open more tabs under 4.2 then 3.2, which is really all that's important.

Decided to give this a whirl after being a die hard Atomic fan for so long. Boy i didnt realize what i was missing. I see icab replacing Atomic as my full time browser.

Yeah. For maybe two or three apps that really are your core apps (and the browser is probably one of those for most people) I always think it's worth the few extra dollars to buy the top one or even two competitors and keep the runners up installed in a "Duplicates" folder on the last page of the apps/home screen. This way they don't clutter up the iPad (or iPhone) and you get update notifications so that you can look at how the competitors are evolving and make decisions as to whether some previous "runner up" has just overtaken your previous favourite and should now be your new prefered choice. It's true that this can be done by keeping an eye on the competitors update announcements and reading user feedback on forums like this but it's a lot easier and more convenient to get the update notifications via the AppStore app and to have the competitor apps already installed so that you can take a hands-on lokk at any update that looks interesting.

The fact that the iOS developer community is so big and active with so many competitors for my key app areas is what made me switch over to Apple mobile devices in May this year. As someone that came from the PC world the apps also still seem dirt cheap to me so even buying a couple of duplicates still has me buying apps at prices that I consider very low (£10 for an office suite like Docs2Go or £3 for a finance manager like PocketMoney for instance - to me that's real value for money).

Or just use AppShopper. :)

I'd assumed that pages in QuickStarter would be pre-fetched when opening iCab, but this doesn't seem to be the case for me. They take as long to load as selecting a page in Bookmarks. Anyone else found this?

I Don't see the need to use this featur. The iPad is highly lacking in RAM and maybe in procesor power . If it will hinder performance you. might as well not use it. Use hookmarks
