I've googled around and couldn't find a description for the icon that shows for wednesday. I'm guessing it's hail? Did Apple add new icons recently?

It is indeed hail. I'm guessing it's new with iOS 6, since it's now winter-time and we've only had iOS 6 since this summer/fall.

its nothing new, how often does it hail? Not very often thats why you dont see it. Its been discussed here before.

I believe I've seen that before iOS 6, and maybe even before iOS 5.

I thought it meant sleet, I don't think hail can really be forecasted with that much accuracy, it sort of just happens with strong thunderstorms.
