I bought a new Homepod Mini in white. I specifically chose white instead of space gray because I though the space gray model would accumulate white dust over time.

However, the white model seems to be immediately dirty with dark splotches. I know that it is actually not dirty, since I've barely handled it. However, the internal core of the Homepod Mini must be black, and it's showing through the exterior mesh. Another problem may be that the small gaps in the lattice structure of the mesh are aggregating into dark splotches.

Anyone else agree with me?

This guy seems to agree with me:

I’ve only purchased Space Gray OG/Minis for this reason. No lint or dust issues on either but I’d rather see lint/dust than I would discoloration. Both colors get dirty at the same rate. Just white shows it more. I’d lose my mind if my toddler children touched a white HomePod with chocolatey fingers.

But to answer your question, yeah, they kinda look discolored out the box. The Space Gray does that to an extent too with the black interior and looking at it from a certain angle/lighting.

The plastic housing is indeed black and the fabric is rather thin on the HomePod mini. My white mini looks exactly the same. I like space gray because pollen turns the white mesh yellowish green.

We have a white one in our daughter's room and it doesn't look dirty to me - I actually kind of like the texture.

How easy is it to clean the mesh on the Homepod Mini, particularly the white one? I'm fearful of it turning yellow from normal oily hands or orange from Doritos chips.

I'd imagine the mesh will make it a chore to clean. Fortunately my daughter is just 10 months old - I have some time before she's old enough to reach it with messy hands!
