New wifi network and DHCP

When I connect my Macbook to a new wfi network, I have to manually renew DHCP. Am I missing a setting somewhere. I assumed that would happen automatically and it stumped me for a minute the first time.

Go to this screen in System Prefs / Network and make sure you have it set to DHCP like in my screenshot.

Yes, Use DHCP is set. It seems to me that when a new wifi connection is established that DHCP should renew the lease. I haven't been able to find a reason to bypass renewal. It doesn't make any sense to just assume that that reusing the address from the previous network is acceptable.

I'm not sure. I took my Macbook to a friends house. I put in the password for his wifi and expected internet access. When I didn't have internet after login, I tried to renew dhcp lease. That worked I had internet. I decided to just continue what I was doing and investigate later. When I go back I can check his router. I can't find anything on my Mac that would cause this.

Have you checked the console? Maybe there's an error there.

When I review my console for "Library = IPConfiguration" I do see the DHCP activity when I turn on WiFi.

Thanks. I hadn't used console before. I found the DHCP entries. I'll use this when I go back and investigate this.
