So one day randomly (happened with 10.3.7) when I click on the finder or hit new window I get the window with no sidebar on it but if I double click on the hard drive it shows the sidebar. What's going on here? I didn't change anything to make this happen and it's quite annoying. Thanks for the help.

Press the little pill button the the top-right hand corner. It switches between the 2 finder modes.

I should say to fix it, close all Finder windows. Next, click on the Finder icon in the Dock. Change the Finder. Close. The next time you click the Finder icon, the Finder window settings should be memorized.
