With the 18th anniversary of Yahoo Mail hitting this month, the company today launched an all-new mail client for its popular service, debuting on both iOS and Android platforms. Most notably, the new Yahoo Mail app will let users combine accounts from services like Outlook, AOL Mail, and Hotmail all under the same roof, which even extends to the Yahoo Mail experience on the desktop.

"Email is the most prevalent way people communicate online. However, what we want from our inbox is evolving. Mobile use requires a faster and smarter inbox," said Jeff Bonforte, senior vice president of communication products at Yahoo. "Both of these needs are at the center of our new app."
The new app also introduces a new concept in password keeping, called the Yahoo Account Key, which the company describes as "a more secure and simple alternative to the old password." Not much detail was given specifically to the way it functions, but Yahoo said it should simplify the sign-in process for Yahoo Mail thanks to the use of push notifications to grant users access to the secure content located within the app.

The new Yahoo Mail app is available to download from the App Store for free right now [Direct Link]. Yahoo notes that the the desktop version of the overhauled Yahoo Mail is strictly aimed at United States users at launch and will be "coming soon" in other territories. The company encourages those interested in more information regarding its mail client to visit the Tumblr page devoted to the launch of the new software.

Not sure if I hate or love the gradient background for the hidden menu feedback on the navbar...

I ditched Yahoo last year after maybe 20 years of use. No amount of redesign will get me back to this once necessary and now piece of crap software waste.

Why am I too lazy to switch to other email providers!

I definitely do not like Yahoo Mail, but am just stuck with it.

Admittedly, it looks pretty good to me. But alas, the web version is awful and I’m happy to have left Yahoo behind. Looking forward to ProtonMail’s native app.

Ditto. I use Mail.app so I am covered on the mobile side. But the web interface is just so awful and unpleasant to use.
I did the same. Consolidated my yahoo, comcast, and gmail accounts to my icloud account a while ago. I have forgotten to check those account in months. Just did and am so glad, because I just found out I have a rich relative in moldova that has left me millions. :D:p

Hmm... interesting. Not sure if I like it or not yet -- but just interesting to know they've been working on the mail system recently. I still use them only because I have one of the really old, grandfathered email accounts from Southwestern Bell that came bundled with their DSL service. (SW Bell got tired of running their own mail server for their users - so they partnered with Yahoo to host it for them, under the swbell.net domain.)

In recent months though, I've started having a lot of problems with that account. The Macs seem like they've got something hard-coded so when they log in to Yahoo email to send messages, they assume your address/login ends in @yahoo.com? Just a guess on my part because I haven't really investigated it much yet, but I get a lot of authentication failures now on sending from it, which make that look like the possible problem. (OS X automatically configures those settings for you now, as soon as you tell Apple Mail your account is with Yahoo. For a long time, I had to use alternate smtp servers for the old swbell.net account with them.)

Maybe I'm just simple, but I like all of my mail accounts in one place (in my case, stock mail) not in their own apps.

Even if I only had one email account account, I'd probably still use it.

Probably why they are giving the option to add other accounts to their app as well, for those that might like their app for whatever reason and could perhaps use it for all their accounts.

THEIR website is filled with intruding ads?

Whose isn't?

People still use yahoo! mail? Who knew? The number one hacked email service evAr? Lulz.

??? evAr ???

All email has been hacked at some point. Just as Windows users are hacked because of the larger numbers, the same is true for Yahoo mail.

Are you sure it was Moldova? Mine have been from Morocco, Beijing, Turkey and the UK (to name a few). Hillary has nothing on me.

I don't use Yahoo's iOS Mail app and will probably use it less now that there is no way to empty the spam folder or send emails from address guard addresses.

I use the iOS Mail app which until today was working fine, but this afternoon push email became unreliable. Emails would occasionally push instantly, but more often they would push anywhere from a few minutes after being received to an hour after being received to never being pushed at all.

I tested 2 Yahoo accounts on 3 different iOS devices with the same result. A third Yahoo account is pushing normally though.

And in the usual manner of these things, they've removed the one functionality I really use - the ability to send from spamguard addresses. Looks like I need to try and find a way of ditching Yahoo again.
