It's a good joke, but poor Barbara Walters probably doesn't have a clue where she is, much less what year it is.

Perhaps you could please care to explain the joke to those of us living in other parts of the world, for some of us don't really get it.

And exactly who are Ryan Seacrest and Barbra Walters?

I think that what ever humor was ever in that joke has been thoroughly stomped to death by now, but FTR she anchored a news show called 20/20.

Ah, okay, now I see.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to explain this to me. Much appreciated.

Thanks for the explanation as to who she is (honestly, I had never heard of her); not sure I see the joke, though. Is it that she is considered too old to ring in the New Year?
No it refers to the fact that this once-sharp journalist has dementia and barely recognizes people around her.

I was going to quote the old adage “Google is your friend” — but strangely, a search of just her name doesn’t turn up any hits that mention that in their titles, nor does Wikipedia say anything. (!) If you didn’t pick up from the context that you should be searching for Barbara Walters dementia you might not find anything. I can see why an explanation was necessary for our international friends.

Thanks for the further explanation, which does clarify the matter.

And, while "google is indeed one's friend", I had googled her name and frankly, was none the wiser as to the context of what was a supposedly witty thread.

My mother - who passed away in December 2018 - had dementia, and to be honest, having lived with her and experienced how her condition deteriorated and how it affected her for the best part of a decade, this is not a topic that I consider remotely funny.
