The city of New York is considering new measures (PDF) that would allow drivers to pay their parking tickets with alternative payment methods like Apple Pay, PayPal, and Bitcoin, reports MarketWatch. Currently, the city says it is collecting roughly $600 million in parking ticket revenue each year, as the region's Department of Finance is looking for a "convenient way for motorists to expeditiously pay their parking tickets via a smartphone or mobile device."

The primary objective of this RFI is to identify and assess mobile platforms that support the payment of parking tickets and learn about their current use and future viability. A secondary objective is to identify existing mobile platforms that support the request for a hearing of parking tickets and learn about their current use and future viability.
New York City's Department of Finance also outlined its requirements for the new payment system, noting that it should allow users to take a picture of a ticket or scan it in to see the details of a parking violation. The city also notes that the graphical user interface (GUI) of the mobile payment system should be "simple" and allow for quick payments that meet payment-industry standards for security.

New York City drivers are currently able to pay for tickets online, via mail or at a courthouse, but the current online system is incompatible with mobile devices and subjects credit and debit card payments to a 2.5% fee. The city hopes to gain more knowledge on a new mobile parking ticket payment system by January 15 through its formal Request for Information, but there are no definite dates as to when the new measures would be implemented.

Oh, I have no doubt that it will. If there's one thing that the government does well, it's making it simple and convenient to pay them. :)

Next on the list is the ability to pay child support via Apple pay.
I wonder if exotic services will be added as well?

If you have a NJ (and I imagine any out of state) license plate you automatically get a parking ticket regardless if you are parked illegally or not. They know 99% will just pay it and not waste their time to come back and fight it.

30 Billion?
Yeah, their math seems odd:
"30 billion in parking ticket revenue"..."by issuing up to 10 million tickets." (from the article).

So, minimum of $3000 per ticket?!?!?!?!? Really? (30 billion/10 million = 3000) (I say "minimum" since they say "up to 10 million".)

30billion? I think they need to skip Apple Pay and allow for mortgage loans to pay those tickets. :D

You are right. Tickets typically around $50 - $100 for illegal parking, significantly more though if you get towed ($300 or so).

Stop making a right on red :D

I near you though, that's how all town are, in jersey city for example, they ticket you because they know you won't take half a day twice to fight a $49 violation. It's income

New York Parking Ticket Enforcement, you just got yourself a new customer!

New York Parking Ticket Enforcement, you just got yourself a new customer!

i wonder if that will lead to the more fanatic bunch (the people that purposely filled up carts of products to disregard at the checkout) to avoid tickets where apple pay is not in use and try to get tickets where apple pay is in use.

So I can pay for a parking ticket with Apple Pay but I still can't do it on public transportation.

it says they are considering. public transport is probably considering as well

They aren't collecting $30 billion in parking ticket revenue. The Department of Finance collects around $30 billion a year. Parking tickets/fines account for about half a billion dollars.

The PDF clearly states, "Each year, the City issues between 8-10 million parking tickets, primarily by the New York City Police Department (“NYPD”) through regular patrol officers and Traffic Enforcement Agents that report to NYPD. DOF collects between $550-$600 million in annual revenues from base fines and penalties on these violations. A further 1.5 - 2 million tickets are adjudicated by the parking court each year online, via mail or in-person."

And I'm sure they will charge you a convenience fee for a service which essentially benefits them more than you in terms of staffing.
