I don't like revenue from fines.

My key issue, is this type of stuff makes it in the government more interested in collecting revenue from the citizens vs working on ways to solve the problems.

I get the need for parking rules. Make sure that cars are in spots that are in general safe and and insure there is enough movement to keep spots open as to keep the economy going.

However there is a tendency to make parking in areas very complicated with extra rules that is nearly impossible for someone new to the area to really get. Thus become a source of the fine.

Say there is a sign (No Parking on Thursday between 10am-1pm) This sign is placed 600 feet away from the parking spot, and there is an other sign 600 feet in the other direction. If you are trying to find a parking spot, it is really easy to miss these signs, and park there. Thus you get a fine.

Now Apple Pay for tickets is Ok. But it should come up with extra features to let you know if you are parked in a spot where you shouldn't so you can avoid the fines all together. Yes the City won't get its revenue... But your city shouldn't be about revenue but health and safety. So such a device to help you park safely should be welcomed right.

Billion

Billion is a big number. sometimes we forget that. Even I was like is $30 billion even possible. Then I thought that there are probably only about 3 million cars in the city (maybe a lot less, but certainly not a lot more with 9 million residents) and they can't each be generating $10,000 in parking tickets a year. So yes the number is ludicrously too high.

But funny (or sad) that I even had to think about it.

What's next? Speeding Tickets?
Officer: "Do you know how fast you were going?"
You: "No Officer"
Officer: "No Problem just give me your iPhone... Now put your thumb right there..."

Your Account: -$75.00
Apple Account: +22.50
Officer "We're good Citizen. Be on your way..."

This is precisely why I hate everything about speed/red light camera tickets. Let's make it easier for the government to nickle n' dime its citizens with very little recourse.

Whatever happened to due process? Or do we just now assume everyone is guilty and make them pay up now?

CTA accepts NFC

In Chicago, I've been paying for my CTA (bus and L) rides with ApplePay since it launched. Of course, Google Wallet would have been supported for longer because it's just NFC.

Edit, oh wait this is talking about parking tickets not public transit. Well, I did pay for a red light camera ticket via credit card here in Chicago too, and there were no extra transaction fees for me for a $100 ticket.

If you have a NJ (and I imagine any out of state) license plate you automatically get a parking ticket regardless if you are parked illegally or not. They know 99% will just pay it and not waste their time to come back and fight it.

And this is why I usually take NJ Transit when I go up to NYC. The one and only time I drove up to NYC, I made sure to find a parking garage to park my car overnight. I refused to park my car on the street.

Why don't they make it easier to pay for parking with Apple Pay rather than pay for a ticket with Apple Pay...

All those ticket issuing machines they put in are fairly new. I suspect they won't be upgraded to NFC anytime soon.

The worse is that there are some small towns that run their police budget partly on just stuff they take from citizens. Pull you over for speeding and they ask you how much cash you have on you. If you lie and are caught you go to jail. If you tell the truth and happen to have a bunch of cash on you for some reason, well it is probably drug money so they just take it right there. Maybe grab your iphone since you probably bought it was drug money and it might have evidence on it.

You want your stuff back, well good luck proving how you came about the cash. You will probably spend more on legal fees to get the money back anyway. And they target folks who are from out of town, so coming back for the trials is a hassle. And guess what, they don't have to press charges to keep the cash! Nice.

I wonder how many people here will get parking tickets on purpose just so they can pay with Apple Pay? :D:D

As i've always said..

This is good its expanding, but if the whole world doesn't use it, it won't take off.

Apple Pay will be ok in dribs & drabs.... and obviously ore governments will use it in the U.S , but what others outside ?

If its not taking off here, then its not even a product as a replacement off that plastic card.

It will be good to see parking tickets suddenly go up as more and more people get tickets just to use Apple Pay.

Parking tickets in the news

By coincidence, the Los Angeles Times reported this week on the great disparities in where parking tickets are issued in L.A.

See graph.

Maybe they'll offer Apple Pay soon too!

That's the cost of one small parking garage in Manhattan.

Okay, so one new garage a year :)

After a couple of decades, it begins to really count!

Sidenote: I'm one of the few people I know who is totally comfortable driving in Manhattan. In fact, I prefer driving myself to taking the subway or... god forbid... trying to find a taxi when the weather is bad. So I like having more garages - grin.

Really?! What happened to the tax system then?

It's difficult to know how little you can get away with paying them, which is what's buried deep within the morass we call a tax code, but when it comes time to pay them however much you "think" you owe them, the process is fairly simple.

I don't get it.
In Brussels, there are parking places and buses that you can pay by sending sms. Works with every phone.

So I can pay for a parking ticket with Apple Pay but I still can't do it on public transportation.

You can use it on Chicago public transit. I quite like it. But the Ventra card is better because it can properly account for transfers and stuff
