iPods are iPods. People can still look both ways before crossing the road. Maybe people should be fined for walking across the street without looking both ways.

Of course they can ..... it's just some choose not to !!!

In the UK / Ireland you can be fined for walking across the road without looking both ways, it's called "Jaywalking" A friend of mine got fined a few years ago !! :)

Jaywalking is usually known as walking across the street [haphazardly] anyplace outside of the designated crossing zones.
It's a stupid ticket to receive but sometimes cops just want to be picky, I suppose. It's my ass, if I want to risk it and walk across the street outside the crossing then so be it, but that's just my take on it. I look before crossing, no matter where I am or what I'm listening to. :p

You can say that but it is not just you who is in danger from it. If the driver tries to swerve away from you and plows into an oncoming car, you're fine but two innocent parties may be hurt.

I must admit, it is stupid to cross the road without looking. It is a huge risk on everyone in the vicinity and ears do also play a part in listening out for vehicles.

This has to be one of the dumbest laws I've heard of in a long time.

It's entirely unenforceable and will just serve to be some lawyers meal ticket.

I wish these law makers would jump back to reality instead of creating laws to fleece its citizens in small dollar amounts.

There is such a thing as carrying laws "for the public good" too far. Yes, if you're walking in traffic with music pounding in your ears, you're an idiot. But this is just nanny-state nonsense. If the problem is really that prevalent, a public education campaign would be a much better idea.

The nanny government is officially of control if this passes. Will the government also forbid me from looking at my watch? What if I am deaf? Will it force me to get a companion who has good hearing?

How does it make you an idiot? I can multitask. I can listen to my iPod and look both ways before crossing the street to make sure things are safe. I can continue to look around me to make sure that all cars are still stopped and not charging towards me.

Like I said, people who don't look both ways are the ones who are in the most danger. I don't think they should be fined, but if you're going to fine someone, then fine those people. People without iPods can get hit by cars too.

I live in NY, and I feel stupid to say, that I actually almost got hit a few times just cuz I was so into my music. So its not so bad...but cops wont give a crap, cuz they never care about any of that non-important stuff.
