I would think having a separate app for every publication would = clutter, which is Un-Apple. More likely is a "Publications" app in the vein of iTunes that is a library all your books, mags, & newspapers.

Agreed. I can't imagine Apple would do this any other way.

I would hope so, but so far the rumors suggest various "apps" for various publishers.

Separate apps are fine, just give us a "container" for all those publication apps and let us access them via a list, a la iTunes. Whether accessing a song file or a publication app, there's no reason it can't all be done from a central media interface.

I sort of agree, but not so much. I already use kindle and the B&N ereader, for example on my iPhone. Each has a different user interface, with just enough similarities and differences to cause me to swipe when I'm supposed to tap, etc. when I switch back and forth.

I want one user interface for as many of my books as is possible.

Nice speech given today by the editor of The Guardian, Alan Rusbridger, as he presents the free content side of the pay wall argument.

Of interest to this forum are his thoughts on mobile, which he admits may quickly be out of date:

"This year will see a fascinating struggle for dominance between the Kindle, the Sony reader, Plastic Logic's Que, the Skiff Reader and LG's 19-inch bendy e-journal. They may all have (if they don't already) significant revenue opportunities. Things are moving so fast that these remarks may be out of date by Wednesday, when Apple is expected to launch something between an iPhone and a Kindle."

Kindle Times Addition

When complaining about the cost of the Kindle NYTimes keep in mind that the Kindle version has no ads. So it is not supported by a serious source of revenue (like the paper version) or a decent source of revenue (like the online version). Personally I think the NY Times and the other major papers screwed up when they started giving away their content for free online. Among my friends that seriously cut into their paper subscription base. I think they will need to charge or else they are going to go out of business or have to radically downsize.

Much like the appstore, the web presents a news marketplace that is a race to the bottom in terms of prices. If NYT tried charging for news but cnn.com was free, how much revenue would NYT get?
