I used Flash Professional, animated my original 'tar, exported as png sequence and used a free app called GIFfun* to make the images into an animation.

*I used GIFfun because Flash has terrible gif export.

If you don't have Flash you could make several copies of your 'tar and gradually darken each frame in Mac OS X Preview, then drag the folder of images into GIFfun.
thanks , tis appreciated.

Don't see what it's gonna do but... tis done. Just give it a few hours to show up.:)

Maybe we can do it again for Earth Hour 2009...? :D

By the time the system would update everyones avatar, Earth Hour will have been over for an hour :p

Hello fellow MacRumors members, as you know we tend to have a little fun and start silly avatar games. This time it is no game and we purposely want everyone to join in with the fight. We have blackened out our avatars to show support for our friends in New Zealand who on Febuary 28 might have to deal with the toughest copyright law ever known. The plan is simple, just darken your avatar to a black square to help protest the new law. Who knows someday a law this strict might come to a country near you.

For details on what we are doing and the reasons behind it you can go here.

I'm with you, just don't have an avatar. That law is simply ridiculous. I hope you are able to prevent it from passing.

I used Photoshop CS3. You know what bugs the crap out of me? Jimmying all the settings in the Save for the Web dialog to get just under the required size, only to have the final file be BIGGER than what it said it was going to be, often by more than 1k. What gives?

Dexter's a little pixel-y as a result (I got sick of trying to be too fine and just made it really small).

Ok , that'd be great, thank you( the ol G3 cannee take it you know)

surprise me, in a nice way :)

What's the before avatar? Send it to me ;)

Here you go?

Just right click and save. Then upload it.

I made my own avatar and other intellectual property so copyright laws only PROTECTS me.

Me too(not the avatar , thanks again OrangeSVTguy, but other intellectual property....... )

The plans are a little on the strong side in NZ, namely being found guilty without trial!! that is what the protest is about , not stealing, which I'm against btw, being found guilty without trial is unacceptable .

" 'Section 92A' that calls for internet disconnection based on accusations of copyright infringement without a trial and without any evidence held up to court scrutiny. This is due to come into effect on February 28th unless immediate action is taken by the National Party."

Bernie's supporting the protest ...

EDIT: Er. Eventually. When it doesn't say "Upload of file failed.":(

We have officially ended our protest, thanks to everyone that joined in. If you want to keep protesting on your own that is fine, just be aware the riot police might see you as an easy target.;):p

It would be nice to have an avatar to protest with, but the silly 500 post rule prevents that. It really needs to be lowered to something less ridiculous like 100 or 250 posts.

Its taken me too long to decide how I wanted to change mine - now the protest is over...... poo. Late for another party.

A new version of this law has been drafted and was made public yesterday. "Guilt upon accusation" is gone, and penalties can now only be handed out by a court or copyright tribunal. The "three strikes" system is still there but it's now "three strikes and the copyright tribunal will look into it" rather than "three strikes and immediate disconnection".

Your "strike count" will reset to zero if you haven't had any notices within 9 months. For small-scale piracy, the plan is to fine for compensation rather than punitive damages, and Internet disconnection should only occur in rare situations and is limited to 6 months. Also, users can protest any notice as soon as it is received.

All in all, it's a huge improvement on the previous government's attempt. The Creative Freedom Foundation welcomes the new proposal.

For anyone interested, the paper is available from here.
