iOS newb question: Xcode devices

I'm not new to programming but am fairly new to Xcode: I downloaded the iPad iOS 4.3 pre-release and Xcode 3.2.6 pre-release. While the Organizer is installing the iOS image the iPad shows up in the "devices" section with a device ID that is bogus. After the iOS image is installed & the iPad reboots, there is a second entry for the iPad in the devices section with its real device ID.

What is the point of that first device? Or is this a glitch in this pre-release Xcode perhaps? Thanks.
