Newbie bookmark question

I understand that the iPad holds my place for me when I leave the book I'm reading, but a number of times I've placed a bookmark and gone back to look at e.g. the table of contents, then I can't find the place I had marked. What am I leaving out?

Tap the TOC button next to the library button in the top left corner, you will then be on the TOC but you will have the options to view bookmarks and also to view notes, tap the bookmarks option and you will see the places you have marked, just tap on one to go to it.
