Have an Intel MacBook running OS 10.4

Want to upgrade to Snow Leopard

Which upgrade package do I need to purchase and will I be able to in fact, upgrade, or will I have to wipe the drive and start fresh?

You can upgrade from Tiger to SL without wiping the HDD.
It upgrades.

Having read some threads since my question, I'm not sure now if Snow Leopard is where I should go with this 1st gen Intel machine.

Does 10.5 include Time Machine? If so, I might just go that far and stop.
