Newbie: Motion Graphics quit displaying handles when importing image

When opening a New project: For some unknown reason whenever I place an image/pic into the canvas area there isn't any handles where I can size up or down the image.

This also happens when adding a kaleidoscope filter.

I opened another file I had worked on previously and the handles are there.

I can navigate to the Inspector and use the controls there, but that seems counter productive, especially when using filters.

What do you suppose is happening and not can I fix it?.?.?

I would appreciate any advice on this subject. BTW: I'm using FCP 5.5, Motion 2.1.2

I didn't know what to look for in the manual.

Thanks again, now I won't have to keep pulling my hair out.

BTW: Do you know anything about PS?.?.? I have a question in the graphics forum, that so far no one has answered. I'm not sure if they understand my problem, or no one knows how to answer my question.
