hey ppl...I'm new to Macs and i just purchased a 12" PB G4 with combo drive off of ebay(and kicking myself for not springing for Superdrive!)...But, anyway I'm wondering what kind of upgrades are suggested for me at this point if any. Right now ive got 1.5 GHz speed,512 MB ram and Mac Tiger. However, Im missing alot of the apps that usually ship with it from the factory like iLife '05, iWork, etc. Now as I said im new to Macs and its just for recreational use so what do I need to get. In order of necessity if its not too much trouble? Oh, one other thing ...has anyone ever use Virtual PC for Mac? If so, was it any good?

Excellent to have someone new to the Mac world.
Ok, initially with the Mac, since you got it off Ebay you should get all the restore and DVD's that came with it, right? I would go ahead and do a complete restore of the machine (it gives it that *brand* new feeling). Not to mention you get to register the machine to you if you want.
After that if I would say boost the memory 512mb more, hell 1Gb if you can afford it, its not that much more, and the more the better right?
With the total restore of the computer you should have iLife to mess around with. Check out its a goood page for the latest and greatest (software that is).

    Newbie ...Again!

Unfortunately, I got this with no DVD's, CDs, or restore disks of any kind. It only came with an AC power cord. But, fortunately I only paid $700 bucks for it which I thought was a steal! And it's like brand new...not a scratch or dent on it anywhere! So what now Gimme?

I will say, that is a good deal. Well you can't do a restore, which doesn't make the computer any better anyway. You are welcome to download whatever now. It's your computer to deal with. There are no real Macintosh setup plans. Another gig or so of RAM is always good. But no real rush for that.

I've used Virtual PC. Found it very difficult to use. Slow. Maybe better now though with Tiger.

Wow... that's too bad. I wonder if you can call Apple and get a replacement set. Is it possible that your seller has the startup disks and just forgot to send them? If you ever have a problem with your system, you'll at least need a startup DVD.

If none of those options work, you should at least buy iLife and Tiger from Apple. Or I guess you could go the eBay route for that as well.

For other software, you could try downloading Neooffice to see if it meets your needs. Most people end up buying MS Office, though. If you don't need a spreadsheet, you could buy iWork, which I've heard good things about but don't own myself.

I'd definitely restore it... and iLife is great (for the most part).

Also if your new PB doesn't have a scrolling trackpad...
the first little free app I'd race over to Version Tracker and grab is SideTrack!

Magic - and makes things alot better!!!!
I'd also grab Adium quickly as well - much better multi client IM program.

There are a couple of threads in here that have lists of many of the most used applications that people use... and explain things.

e.g. VLC for playing video (another must have imho).

Welcome to the club mate! You will love it!
