I'm thinking about setting up Apple Pay or Wallet on my iPhone to pay for a particular app subscription, however... I don't want my debit or credit card connected to it. Is there a way to just use an Appple or iTunes gift card? And if so, one of my fears is that I'd get a negative balance. Is that possible with that kind of set up?

Not sure about Apple Pay but you can use an Apple Store Gift card. HOWEVER there must be a credit/debit card on the account as a backup method for payment. Gift Cards are used first BUT if there is not enough on the gift card to pay a subscription(or anything else bought from Apple) the credit/debit card on file gets charged for the remaining balance.

If you have an account on the App Store, you already have a card attached to it. If you receive gift cards, you can add them to your account and deductions will made from the balance until it reaches zero before your card will be charged.

Apple Pay is something else entirely. It’s a contactless method for paying for goods at retail or online.

Say I try to buy or subscribe to an app with my Apple ID, with no credit card connected. Say I have $2.00 as my balance, and I attempt to buy something that is $3.00... will it go into a negative balance, or will it simply say not enough funds?
