Newbie Question About switching from electric to Battery

Do I have to shut down the computer before I start using the battery? Is it REALLY bad just to unplug it. Tonight I don't want to lose a connection I have on a live music site but I have to move the mac.

Nope, it's completely okay to just disconnect from AC power and move to battery.

and you're talking about a MacBook or a MacBook pro,not an iMac, right?
