newbie question regarding finding a network

i recently got my ipod touch and i havent been too successful at connecting it too a network so i can use safari or youtube, how can i get connected most networks r locked or just unable to find a connection?
also since im new what is the whole jb process for the itouch? i figured i might just return the i touch and get an iphone that way ill have a better connection thru at&t as my service provider???

you can only get to unlocked networks and it will search for it... but you just have to find the right place... if you dont have wireless internet, then i would go with the phone... also the jailbreak makes it so that your touch or phone can use third party apps like games, or utility prgorams.... anything that anyone makes.... there are so many great apps out there for it too!
