Does Time Machine ONLY back up to an external hard drive or does it also back up to the hard drive in the computer?

When I got my MacBook back in May, I remember being able to use it right out of the box (unless I'm mistaken), but after today (ran into the SL bug where it deletes all your data), I can't seem to configure TM to work anymore.

Help?

Time Machine (TM) does require an external or extra HDD to do backups, as backing up to the source HDD (internal) would defeat its purpose.
Therefore you need an external HDD connected to configure a drive/volume for TM to backup to.

You should be able to backup to a secondary internal hard drive; however, as you're using a MacBook, you have only one internal hard drive, therefore, backing up to an internal hard drive is not available in your situation.
