Hello, I'm really considering getting a blackbook and joining the mac world. Right now I am using a 4 year old PC and I usually just do the basics but I download a lot of movies and tv shows, etc. and rip my own dvd's onto my computer for my ipod. I was wondering if the refurb blackbook (2.2 ghz) would be ok for these needs. I probably would buy 2 or 4 gb of RAM since its so cheap from 3rd party sellers. All opinions are much appreciated ! Thanks !!!

The current macbooks are excellent computers. They're very close to the macbook pros in fact. If you don't need a dedicated video card for playing a lot of games, the blackbook will be an awesome machine.

If you're willing to shell out for a blackbook, I'd highly recommend you look at the refurb macbook pros on apple's website. The cost of a relatively recent revision mbp is about $1450, which is about what a new blackbook costs. You gain a bigger screen, dedicated graphics card and a few other things. You give up the ability to easily upgrade your hard drive yourself. I vastly prefer the macbook pros over the macbooks, so it'd be an easy call for me. The macbook's are great laptops as well (I use my girlfriend's all the time), but for the same dollar amount, I'd pick up a macbook pro every time. You'll find Apple's refurbs to be essentially new computers, and in great shape.

I haven't seen better than $1600 for a refurb MBP in a long time. That's a lit compared to $1050 for a refurb SR blackbook.

I actually have a pro myself, and my GF has the macbook as the above poster said.

For me, pro is the way to go but I'm a pretty hardcore developer. But I can also appreciate the smaller Macbooks, their form factor is nice.

I have purchased refurb hardware from apple and it has always been in perfect condition aesthetically. But I don't think going blackbook would be a wrong decision.

The Blackbook is more than enough for your needs. Ignore the ones who say you HAVE to get a Macbook Pro. You'll save a lot of money purchasing the Blackbook and you'll have a very capable machine.

    Yep

Blackbook will suit you just fine.

I'm buying one here shortly (upgrading from my 12" PB G4).

    Happy computing.

Why not a white one its cheaper than the black, unless you think its just too ugly but thats ur opinion.
it has the same spec. as the black one and the HDD can be easily upgraded and for cheaper.

    Agreed

Correct on all points. I'm getting the black one cause I think it's way cooler and have a feeling I'll be less bothered by the shininess of the worn out wrists rests on the black one versus the yellowish ness of the white.

But it's definitely not a financial decision. With same specs, the black is $100 more.

Compared to your current computer, you will be amazed at the capabilities of the blackbook.

I wouldn't get the white one, the black one's seem to have a little bit less errors and externally less susceptible to scratching

They had macbook pros for $1449 when I looked the other day -- C2D, 120 Gb HD, 2.2 GHz. They may have gone quickly.

I'd agree with anyone that says that, provided the blackbook is cheaper, there's not a hugely compelling reason to get a MBP for your needs. I was arguing that a refurb MBP might be the same price as the new blackbook he was thinking of, in which case I'd opt for the MBP.

The Blackbook is definitely sufficient and is way cool. I'm a MBP fan but the BB is cool and small if that's what you want.

Just bought a Black MB 2.2 refurb, it arrived in flawless condition,(mint),added 4Gb Kingston RAM, a Sienna Red Case-Mate Leather case, and a Logitech Bluetooth Mouse, I be in bidness
This is my first Mac, and I am impressed. 4-5 open programs, answering e-mail,all while running Aperture 2, and setting up Bento, with friends photo's, and this baby doesn't even break a sweat, all the while outputting graphics to a second monitor mounted on a swing arm, with i-Tunes music in the background., yeah, make the move, I am so glad I did. I am never looking back to PC world again;):apple::apple::apple::apple::apple:

Yes x 3. If it comes down to choosing between a new blackbook and a refurbished $1449 MBP, this is a no brainer: get the MBP! 9 times out of 10 I'll rec the Macbook, but in these kinds of situations, go with the MBP, hands down.

I think this is simply due to the fact that there are fewer black MacBooks "out there" than white MacBooks. However, I think that the case itself of the BlackBook is a little heartier than that of the WhiteBooks.

YES- 100% yes, get the BlackBook. I just got one a little over a week ago and I love it. I'm a picky bastard too. It will be more than fine for your needs.

Do not get the black macbook go for the white one. go with the white one. My friend got the blackbook and it always look dirty from fingerprints and smudges, re returned it and got the whitebook which does not have that problem. I myself used the blackbook for a while and i always noticed it being dirty that all went away with the whitebook.

well if you do a lot of visual orientated stuff like video gaming and even movie watching the screen size might not be sufficient. i love my MBP and think it would be hard to adjust to a MB screen... but your call

Yes, but if he's watching movies on an iPod then the Macbook screen is gonna feel like being at a cinema!
