Is it wise to consider a newegg open box hard drive? It's substantially cheaper than retail.

Yes. Open Box means that the customer got the product, but never took it out of packaging. 😉 I got a fantastic deal on an "Open Box" Gateway HD2200 22" monitor. Picked it up a few months ago for $199, which was an amazing deal at the time. 😀

So go for it! Open Box deals are always worth checking out.

Im pretty sure "Open Box" means the customer opened the box, and tried the product/ didn't like it and returned it. Otherwise why would the call it open box, if it was never opened.

I agree. Surely it couldn't just mean that they opened the box it was shipped in, but not the actual product box.

This was from a page on Newegg.com:

Newegg.com does not test any product, including OPEN BOX items. Open Box components are therefore only tested by the original manufacturer. Due to the varying quality of manufacturer testing, YOU ARE TAKING A RISK BUYING OPEN BOX PRODUCTS. OPEN BOX products contain components that have previously been owned by other clients and returned to Newegg.com. These products are sold considerably under cost.
