Unfortunately aluminium scratches it’s a soft metal, that’s why I always get silver, yeah the colours look good for a few weeks but once they’re scratched I can’t deal with the metal shining through underneath.

The anodisation used is just a very thin layer of colour, so a small nick or scratch and you will see the bare aluminium underneath.

I am afraid that apple will most likely put this down to general wear and tear and it won’t be covered under any sort of warranty.

Do you have apple care, I’m not well versed on it but I am sure you can have so many accidental damage claims for a fee but not 100% sure.

exactly why I returned my midnight for silver. Finger prints wasn't the issue for me, it was how easily it would show any little mark in the finish. My Silver M2 looks brand new still

Yeah I once dipped my toe getting a darker colour apple device (I think it was the iPhone 5 black and slate), it was a time when scuffgate was a thing. Mine came scuffed out of the box and I returned it.

That was the one and only time I willingly went for a darker device and never touched any since (other than the iPad mini 6 space grey model, which if they release a silver version in the future I will likely replace the one I have), personally I understand devices get nicks, scuffs and scratches over time, but these dark coloured aluminium devices just never fair well in the shorter term unfortunately.

Your Mac didn't get scratched by itself. Whatever you have done handling the Mac caused the damage. I don't think it is right to blame Apple much less return it because there is no defect to the Mac.

I’ve always been a big fan of space grey and black on my devices. I have a space black 14 pro max and space grey iPad pro. My desk is black, Black monitor, series x etc

So I was excited to get a dark MacBook to match the set up. But not worth it after seeing how poor the finish is for durability. As awesome as the midnight m2 looked, I wanna keep it long term and not see every knick and scratch in the finish. Especially when underneath is nice bright silver, really sticks out

Yeah it seems like whenever apple go any darker than space grey this issue seems to come to light… they still haven’t cracked the dark anodisation durability of aluminium unfortunately, I am wondering how the midnight iPhone 14/14 Plus models are holding up for users.

I see a nick right outside the box. It's BTO so I have to send it back and wait for an exchange :(

Another apple apologist. Apple can screw up just like any other company. It’s been well documented and plenty of video/photos out there to prove how easy it get scratched and scuffed.

My wife’s black razer still looks brand new and it’s two years old. Works on it full time for her work

I am not apologizing for Apple. The scratches are from the OP’s mishandling.

yea, and everyone else's too right? OR it could be a possibility that apples finish just isn't durable enough? Crazy theory
Not every incident is the same. Some have been known to have a scratch right out of the box. I have personally experienced such in the past. The OP's damage clearly shows a scratch as well as pronounced wear in one small area from what appears to be from external rubbing against the Mac. If I thought the damage was from the factory from either a defect or bad worker handling, I would have said so. I have made such posts many times during my 10 years here.
