I also want to ask you opinion on these?

Cocktail

http://www.gordy-n-mikie.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi?url=gordy/comp/mac_general/maintenance/

According to your answer, I just leave my Mac running as settings dictate? Can I get the monitor to shut off? Does that save energy over natural sleep, any advantages with either? It monitor sleep just easier?

I hope that you are OK my friend? ;)

According to what you've posted:

Process 1 is taking 597.00 minutes per percent
Process 2 is taking 694.50 minutes per percent

Process 1 will finish in 407.95 hours
Process 2 will finish in 509.30 hours from the time you acquired the information, of course.

That would be 17 days and 21 days to finish, respectively, at the current rate. That doesn't mean that it won't change rates.

You might want to do a work later today to confirm what I've calculated.

This is after my G4 running constantly for 24 hours. Is it normal for the fan to run constantly? Notice that when not using the Mac the hard drive cycles quit frequently. MrMacman, I would really appreciate your input to my question on my previous post. I want to do what is best for my Mac, just want a second opinion. I went to the Stats page, tried to look at all pages and didn't find my name. Is there a finding mechanism? The colors and no definitive order makes it very difficult for me to find. I recognized a lot of the names on the list, just not mine!

Process 1 will finish in 26.47 hours

So, you have a little over a day (from 13:37) for them both to complete and to see your name on the web page.

wdlove --
I acually have SOX, Cocktail and also use Disk Utility...

I don't use a few features for each and a few of the features overlap, but running those programs will surely increase a little speed.

Also turning your monitor off is a very good idea, there is no reason to waste electricity for no reason.

Your work units are moving fine.

At this rate your units will be done soon, and at that time your name will be found when you search for it, but not before that.

I'm nor sure what is happening, it is not running as predicted. I had the opposite problem this time. Last evening I made some backup copies of my documents. I closed all applications. This time I noticed complete silence from the G4 no fan or HD cycling? So I'm not sure if I did something wrong or not. Do these programs run intuitively, such as run through setup and how to use? Thanks again MrMacman. ;)

Yes taking longer then expected...

Hmmm...

You can always check if folding is still running by going into Your utilities folder and go to CPU Monitor/Process Viewer and check if its running.

Running slower... yes, but if its moving a long your still good.

By now (if its running) you should be near 94% on that first processor... so very very soon, by Monday night they should both be done easily.

:D

I close all of my applications that I don't use when I am not using my computer so folding runs faster... that might just be it...

As always MrMacman thank you my friend! ;) My Mac when I'm not using it acts just the same as if i put it to sleep myself from the Apple menu.

Preferences - Energy Saver

Put Mac to sleep when inactive for: 10 minutes

Put Mac sleep when inactive: checked 8 minutes

Put hard disk(s) sleep when possible: checked

I hope that you will be able to effectively assess the problem. My hope is to be helpful to the team.

I am now running Panther. If I switch to another user, is F@H still folding in the background? Or do I need a copy of the program running on the other user's screen?

W.D. Love- I noticed you had some concerns about energy usage and wear and tear on the computer. I thought about the same thing. The only tip I can offer is to keep you modem turned off (if you have an always on connection) when a unit is nearing completion. That way, F@H will have no choice but to stop until you get online and get another work unit. At least, if you are worrying about heat, it will have a little time to cool down. Lately, I've been folding about two days. When I leave for work and it's almost done with a unit, I turn off the modem and when it completes, it has 4-8 hours before starting a new unit. I feel like I'm contradicting myself with folding. I put in all these flourecent lights, sealed off my windows in plastic four the winter and bought new more energy efficient appliances. Now, the little dent I made in the world's energy consumptions is being off-set by F@H!!! Oh well, at least it's for a good cause.

One last thing- I checked the stats, and it seems that there are nearly 100 folding teams with Apple or Mac in the name. I wonder if we could convince some of the smaller ones to disband and join us, for the common cause of getting a Mac team higher in the rankings?

wdlove:

It looks as though you have a few more hours, considering my earlier calculations and your latest posted percentages.

Personally, I have everything in the Energy Saver panel set to Never. I have a 3rd party LCD monitor that I shut off separately. I've never trusted sleep on Mac OS X since the various times I tried it on two machines were disastrous. Use it at your own risk.

It's probably cutting into the folding time somewhat, but I cannot determine without a detailed, prolonged analysis, which I'm loath to do. Boston is too far and too cold. :D

Obviously, at 75-77 minutes per percent, you're doing okay, but not burning a path to greatness. You'll feel better when you show up with 102.80 points from both work units.

What do you suggest that I do MrMacman? Please check above post. ;) Want to do the best by you and my G4!

wdlove -- I suggest you turn off your sleep mode.

While sleep mode is enabled Folding is not running, nor any other process.

What I don't understand is how you have 2 energy saver settings...
I have 1 setting for mac... one for monitor and one for hd spinning

I keep my mac to never sleep.
I make my monitor sleep after 2 minutes... (to save some power)
And I have the check off for hard drive spinning, it doesn't save much power... and it slows your computer.
