Awsome for the lady getting back her iPhone. Luckily I haven't had to track down my iPhone yet.

Would have been cheaper for the police to give her the money for a replacement phone. :D

Haha definitely. Nothing like spending $10000 for a full aerial assault for a $500 phone.

    Well..

    Consider the following:
The helicopter was already patrolling the area. Its not like the force ran out of the control center up to the helipad and into the copter in hot pursuit.

The thief escaped from the hospital on a BMX bicycle.

If anything, this is probative of the alleged incompetence of the police task force in the AU.

Not only that, probably gave them more experience on that kind of thing in a situation that doesn't involve some killer nut job.

    I agree.
Wasted way too many resources and man-power on a cellphone.

Considering that helicopters cost more to fly per minute than a new iphone, it really doesn't matter that it was already in the area.

I believe they said the helicopter was already in the area. So the resources are already being used. They did not say if the helicopter remained in the area longer than originally planned, so any assumption that it costs extra to find a phone is just an assumption.
For all we know, they were doing a study on the speed of an unladen european swallow, and they would be in the area for another 30 minutes.

That being said, I'm glad they caught the thief and hope he is the one that has to reimburse all costs associated with his apprehension.

To me it's less about the cost of the iPhone, and more about punishing the little bastard who steals things (from women). That's definitely worth the cost involved (IMHO).

Next thing you know, they'll be sending attack drones, lol. But a helicopter, that's a little extreme, don't you say? After all it's not like her Ferrari got stolen.
