I was just suggesting that for your average Joe (which I'm not suggesting for even for a minute includes 840quadra!) running a Newt on a daily basis is not a particularly practical proposition. I wouldn't want someone to buy a Newton expecting it to be just like using a modern PDA, its clearly not. Is it a lot of fun to use on a non-serious basis - yes.

I wouldn't say that at all, I use my MP2100 daily for a notepad, for checking email wirelessly and as a planner. I also have 3 eMates (one working and 2 in spares/repair condition) and I have used the working one for school work, granted it does have a very small keyboard (it is actually bigger than the one on some sony vaios), but it works really well and did everything I needed from it until I needed to do X-Y line graphs in the spreadsheet app (Pelicanware Quickfigure) It can even print to hp printers via infared, stylewriters, imagewriters and laserwriters, then I got my Pismo, but I still use my 2100 for an organiser. It is a lot of fun too, with the vast array of games for it including a NES emulator ;). Anyway it's currently telling me I need to do some homework for tomorrow so I'd better get it ticked off. See, it is useful ;)

Thanks 5300cs! :D

But, unfortunetly yesterday I just noticed my prized Newton 2000 on the floor in it's case, my brother dropped it on his way out and in the middle of the screen was a tiny black dot, about the size of a pencil tip. I put a brief amount of preasure on it and a few hours later it degraded to a smaller dot but, it's still pretty visible, it's in the middle of the screen. Damn....poor little Newton! :(

I hope it magically fixes itself...any tips maybe on how to maybe heal it? That's the good thing I like about my eMate, the screen faces the keyboard so it's more protected.

MP2000 dot

I dunno about that, my eMate had a huge point on the screen when I got it (it looks like someone applied a little too much pressure) and it is really visible when the contrast is turned down, I find turning it up gets rid of it, but then the screen becomes hard to see...

Im not for a minute suggesting that the Newt is not a great piece of kit, I love the Newt, its just not a particularly practical proposition for everyday use in a business environment, or if you are not very technically minded or computer literate. I still have not managed to get mine to connect to my wireless network, some pointers on how to do this would be appreciated.

If one where looking for a cheap portable computer for basic word processing, email & web surfing, I would suggest a Powerbook 1400C is a much better buy than the Bat Newt. I have always thought the emate would make a great computer for 3rd world countries where there is no ready power source and price is key. Why didn't Apple explore this market, only now are we seeing designs for a $200 laptop for the developing wold, Apple had the answer 10 years ago!

My dad has a couple of old Newtons, I don't know what models. He said awhile ago that I could have one, I will have to remind him of it. We always have two emates, my sister and stepbrother use them. Anyhow, I like them better than the Palm, and they will do what I want to do without troubles.

I don't know, I use my MP2100 on a daily basis. It does everything I want it to do, with the exception being internet access. In all honesty though, I haven't tried very hard, and I didn't try WiFi at all (nor Bluetooth.)

As for the dot on the screen, well, at least it's not broken. If the screen cracks, you are in major trouble. If the screen is cracked, then the digitizer won't work, and you have a Newton that won't respond to pen input.

There's a program I use, called Data Rescue which is simply a small program that automatically opens a connection to your computer, and waits for the computer to respond. Simply hook up the Newton to your Mac/whatever, and reset it, and it'll connect. After that you can get all your data off it. Link: http://www.unna.org/view.php?/utilites/DataRescue

If you check NewtonTalk.net, there are people out there who will do Newton backlight, digitizer and screen replacements.

As for a truly portable old Mac laptop, what about the 2400 series? Apple's 2nd line of sub-notebooks after the Duo series. With 603e chips going up to 180mhz (240 if you can find the Japan only model) it will run OS 9 more than well enough (mine does.) No built-in ethernet or CD drive, but 2 PCMCIA slots on the back, and a very small footprint. http://everymac.com/systems/apple/powerbook/stats/mac_powerbook2400c_180.html

Food for thought.

Newton 2100

I am new to Newton. I bought a 2100 off eBay and it came with a PB 1400. Here is my question.

Can I use my Newton with OS 7.6.1?

I plan on using the Newton everyday once I can get it synced with a laptop.

Yes. Did it come with any cables to hook it up to the 1400?
You'll need Newton Connection Utilities (I think that's the name of the program.)

who here has a newton and what model is it?

I have at-least one of everyone Including Prototypes, Clones, Etc... I have about 120+ MessagePads plus well over 400 Accessories. I love the good old Newton!!

I have a 2000 and a 120, which I haven't used in a while, but I've used ethernet syncing with NewtSync and it works OK. The real problem is that, while Address Book is OK, iCal is a piece of crap.

The Newton is an excellent PDA. For one thing, it has an Agenda view where you can see both Events and To-Dos on one screen. Imagine that! To this day, neither Palm nor Windows CE (or whatever they call it these days) still can't do that. Also, it moves uncompleted To-Dos forward in time automatically, instead of forcing you to do it yourself. Wow! If that'd been invented recently, I'm sure someone would've patented it.

I couldn't get Newton to recognize my scrawl effectively, but Graffiti on the Newton is as perfect as it could possibly be. And with a screen size that's big enough to actually show some amount of text, you can use it as a portable word processor. Battery life may not be all that great, but with flash memory, you need never worry about losing any of your data.

Yes, you need to get linear flash cards, which are pretty rare, and worry about the year 2009. But I think there are community fixes for these problems.

Yes, it's big. You can't beat a Palm M500 for pocketability. But nobody is going to write the great American novel on a Palm or a Treo -- and certainly not on a cellphone.

I don't want to hijack this thread...but i have been scouring the net trying to find an answer to this and I just can't seem to. So...here I go...

I got really lucky and got a screaming deal on a VERY nice 2100. It has a Proxim RangeLan2 Card, 24meg card...and it seems to recognize both of them. I just can't seem to connect to my PPC G5 tower. I get OS 9 running and have appletalk running....I am at a loss here.

Any suggestions?

i have a newton 2100 its good but anyone know how to connect it to a imac intel?but anyways i got a good deal for those of you who want a 2100 at jksalesinc.com was like 100 dollars

Lets try and be a bit more helpful here shall we.

As was suggested earlier in this thread, you could try Newten or Newt-Sync, both 'should' work on an Intel Mac under Rosetta? You will need a serial to USB adapter as well. Personally my preferred route is to sync my Newts with a classic Powerbook. Old school PDA with old school Mac, its the way to go.

I use Newton Connection (NCX) which works flawlessly in OSX 10.4 and 10.5.

Of course you'll need a USB to Serial adaptor to physically connect the Newton to your Mac. The best trouble-free one is the Keyspan USA-28X.

Or, if you have an 802.11b wireless PC card (NetGear MA401) to slot into your Newton, you can connect wirelessly through your airport network instead.

Or, an ethernet LAN PC card (3Com 3CXE589ET) and connect via ethernet cable.

But both wireless and ethernet require you to first have to connect via serial/usb anyway and install Newton Internet Enabler and the PC card driver on your Newton first if they're not there already.

Hope that helps.

I have both the wireless and wired ethernet cards. For some reason I can't seem to get them to work. I am currently reviewing http://www.chuma.org/newton/ethernet/ and trying to get it to work. Although I am open to any other resources available.
