I have some files that are being very stubborn, and handbrake has worked so well for me in the past, I really have no idea what to try to get these files encoded to a TV friendly format.

The probability is that they are oddball files, but it is for an an entire season of a very old show that I am unable to find another source for.

The files play with no errors or audio sync issues on VLC, so the data is good, just need something that will deal with the file type correctly.

When added to handbrake, the file completes almost immediately with no errors, but I am left with nothing but a 2kb file.

Any good ideas how to re-encode stubborn files?

Have you tried QuickTime or VideoMonkey?

Also, it would be helpful if you posted here both a MediaInfo report of the AVIs as well as the Handbrake log of your failed encodes.

Are these the proper pieces of information I need to receive help?

Using the wiki:ActivityLog for handbrake; is this the correct "log" you are looking for?

    I have tried quicktime.
"The document “Dallas.s05e01.dvdrip.xvid.avi” could not be opened. A required codec isn't available."

I do not have Perian installed.

    I have not tried VideoMonkey.

    Should I try these first?
I have tried to keep from installing anything that is not fundamental, but if you are fairly sure these will get the job done, I will install these items.

Making the assumption the HB "logs" mean something to you, is there a reason why these files do not want to encode properly?

Never really had issues with HB,its been the most valuable piece of free/paid software I have ever used, and I am infinitely grateful for it.

Another POI, I am still using HB9.5, as the "Quality:Target file size" is incredibly important and useful to me.

The files look like standard AVIs to me, with XviD mpeg4 (PAL) video and MP3 audio. The Handbrake logs look fine to me, as well, but hopefully Dynaflash will respond to your thread; he's a Handbrake developer.

Handbrake shouldn't have a problem with these files. See if you run into the same problem with VideoMonkey. Also, install Perian and see if Quicktime will open the files. You can always uninstall Perian later.

VideoMonkey seems to be handling the files OK, though it has not completed its encode ATM.

Thank you for taking the time to help, I know us laymen really appreciate it more than we can express!
