I've been following along online and am anxious to get a hold of one. Anyone have dates of release for the Galaxy Gear S Wearable at AT&T? I've read early November, so I'm expecting it any day. With a nice 10 trip in mid Nov. coming, I'd love to have it along to try out.

Two reasons I would never purchase this:
    1. Tizen based OS
    2. Only bridges with a few Samsung phones.

It looks really nice though. Just not my cup of tea do to software limitations.

    From the article:
"Similar to Samsung's recent Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and Gear Fit wearables the Gear S will run the company's Tizen software and will only be able to be paired with other Samsung phones like the Galaxy S 5 and recently released Galaxy Note 4. If you have another device you can forward your number to the phone and use the built-in cellular service on the watch to access email, music or social networks when you don't have your phone with you."

I'll be first in line also for one of these bad boys. I'll keep my Note 4 for everyday use, but the Gear S will be for those times I really need to run lean.

Hmmm, I thought the Gear S was a completely standalone phone? Seems from this statement it's not totally standalone?

"*Gear S requires pairing w/compatible Samsung smartphone with Gear Manager app for activation, software updates, and app downloads. Compatible Samsung smartphone (sold separately) must be on and connected to AT&T data network for SMS/MMS and 3rd party app notifications to be routed from AT&T smartphone to Gear S when Bluetooth connection is unavailable."

So far, with my experience owning the original LG G Watch, Gear 2, and now the Moto 360, I think I prefer Android Wear over the Tizen OS Samsung puts out. That being said, I might still pick one of these up because the battery life on Tizen has in general been better that the Android Wear watches I've owned. Although, with the most recent updates to the 360, the 360 is getting pretty solid battery life too.

It is 99% standalone but needs a Samsung phone running Android 4.3 or later to download and install apps.

The Gear S is a 3G and Wi-Fi-device. It can thus make calls, receive calls, check messages and be connected to GPS even without a phone nearby. My understanding is that it will pair with a Samsung phone and somewhere there is logic in the form of an app that will give users the ability to receive notifications from when away from their phone.

The guy at AT&T today told me it will run a dual sim card thus it won't need a separate phone number to be used. I'm not sure he's entirely accurate, but just passing on things. My guess is it will pair with a phone but I'm not sure if both devices ring? Not sure how that works or is set up.

Not sure why they put a QWERTY keyboard on it though. Almost useless on that size screen

If there ever was a product that is guaranteed to be DOA this would be it.

If the Apple Watch didn't have an Apple logo on it, I would peg that as DOA before this smartwatch. At least this has what I would expect from a futuristic looking watch with a big, bright curved display. The Apple Watch looks like a child's play toy by comparison. If any other company had made something like the Apple Watch it would have been listed DOA right away.

Wow, now I understand why Samsung is doing so badly. Why on earth would you shackle a standalone phone with a Samsung only smartphone? Guys like us who will buy both have to be pretty rare.

ATT suggests putting it on a $10 mobile share plan so it seems like it will be more of a data device. But they do mention you can "forward" your main phone number to the gear, suggesting it will have a phone number unless its being done with voip/data.

The only other caveat is Tizen, that's certainly a bummer.

we'll see how it works. although I won't be typing long emails or text replies on it much. I will likely just use voice dictation as I do most all the time on my phone now.

Not to derail the thread, but after owning quite a few smartwatches I think pebble got it right. The only thing I want from a smartwatch is notifications of a message/email. It becomes pretty cumbersome when you try to really interact with a watch. Apple really is going in the wrong direction with the watch.

well for me I don't always have or want my phone with me. this type of a device would be perfect. I really just need access to phone and text messages. If I get an email that needs a response, I'm more of a pick up the phone an talk live person than one that keeps the email threads going.

    Just got goosebumps.....

    ----------

Everyone has their own uses cases. I don't want a watch that will do anything other than tell time....prompt me for calendar items. Maybe some location based alerts or reminders. But I don't want to have to engage or take action on such a small screen other than to dismiss the alert. I carry a Note 4 (5.7 inch screen) for everything else.....

Totally agree. That's why I think these types of products will always be very niche oriented. I love my Note 3, I just often don't want or carry it with me.

Overall though, I've not seen one in person and may end up finding out it's actually too big or too ugly. Although I think I can tolerate a larger device given a lot of my higher end timepieces are large too.

Speaking of the next big thing, whose looking to cop that Galaxy Note Edge for a cool $1000? I find the idea of the phone interesting, but for $1000, I dunno...

I stopped by the local AT&T Store and they weren't sure if they would be getting them in on Friday. They are do to be told about merchandising tomorrow, so I'll find out then.

I'm pretty sure one of the larger retail locations near where my travels will be in a couple weeks was slated to get them as per an earlier message I read some where on the AT&T site.
