Same here - I've got a 15" MBP and 21" iMac so I'll typically use the iMac when at my desk, but just couldn't stand lugging the MBP around anymore when I travel. The iPP with keyboard folio, as expensive as it is, makes traveling just that much easier. I figure if there are wear or quality issues with the keyboard folio in the first 12 months, either Apple will replace it, or I'll chalk it up to the folio taking the beating that the iPad didn't have to and get a new one. Hopefully Apple won't change the form factor of the 12.9" iPad Pro for at least another year.

Do these things ever go on sale from non-Apple retailers? Just curious before I take the plunge.

Not that I’ve seen. What I did to cut the price, was turn in an old iPad Air that I wasn’t using. Saved about $60 or so.

Found an open box, excellent condition Best Buy deal. Saved $65.

Best I could do!

I just saw your previous post and was gonna mention that I bought mine here on the forums for $100 shipped, and it was in new condition. It looks like you got a decent deal though!

I definitely was keeping my eyes peeled and searching the marketplace but seems the deals dried up for now. But yes a perfect condition open box with a good chunk off the price eased the purchase pain a tad :)

After trying the Logitech Keys-to-go for a period I found the typing feel not conducive. So, I went to the Apple Store to look at the keyboard folio and make a final decision.

I couldn’t do it. I like the ‘regular’ folio too much and don’t (personally) like the feel of the new Smart Keyboard with the rigid keyboard plane. It was also really quite heavy on the 12.9 device.

Whilst I was there I also looked at the Magic Keyboard ‘in the metal’ and was very interested in it. It is almost exactly the same size as the 12.9 across the long edge, and it is a ‘proper’ desktop-class keyboard. So I decided to take a punt on it:

I’ve been using it fairly regularly for over a month, now, and I’m really happy with my purchase. In an ideal world it would be Space Grey but the aluminium finish is fine. It feels great to use and my go-to assessment is: would I be happy to write a book using it? The answer is yes...

Sure, it needs to be carried separately in my bag but I have a slim case for it and that’s no problem at all. The combined weight of iPad and Magic Keyboard is probably similar to the weight of iPad + Smart Keyboard, but you never really carry both in the hand at the same time so, again, no issues there.

Definitely worth considering and Smart Folio + Magic Keyboard is the same price as Smart Keyboard so comparable from that perspective, too.

Quick question. Does the keyboard ever disconnect from the pro? I tried this a long time ago with the Air 2, and if I paused when I was writing for too long, when I started typing again there was a delay when the iPad reconnected to the keyboard. I think it was trying to save power.

Can’t say that I’ve had disconnects like that. I have occasionally had buffering when using Bluetooth keyboard and headset at the same time. I just use my iPhone for music in that scenario, now, to avoid the potential issue.

If you’re talking the keyboard folio, as long as it stays connected to the back of the iPP (and the Smart Connector), it stays connected. I’ve never had an issue since January when I got it.

Thanks for the reply. I was talking about the Bluetooth keyboards. When I paused to think while writing on the Bluetooth keyboards, if I waited too long, there was this delay or lag were I had to hit a key to wake up the keyboard again. So if I was to type a word or two, it might miss a letter or two. It was really annoying. If the ASK is a constant connection, Ill have to just get that.

I’ve just done a test. A pause of approx 30 seconds did not introduce any kind of disconnect. Nor did one of over a minute.

The new generations of iPad and Magic Keyboard seem to have very good Bluetooth device management.

Is there a writing position with the keyboard when using the pencil? Is it comfortable to hold like a tablet and read? Also, how do you transport the pencil? It imagine it would get disconnected if just left connected to the iPad directly.
