Ok what about for your basic user ie word/net/itunes having a few apps open as well as running parallels with win 7

Even my nearly 4 year old first gen MacBook Pro can easily do all that and much much more. Win 7 in Parallels 5 even gets full Aero support.

As I said earlier, hard to justify upgrading to the latest MBP when my old one is still going strong. Rather than worry about your Mac being out of date accept that updates come along and enjoy your machine. There are plenty of people still running G4 PowerBooks. These things last ages. Tough too. I came off my motorcycle a while back and dented the corner of my MBP since it was in my backpack and I basically landed on it. Still runs fine though. I expect I could even knock the dent back out easily enough. Nice thing about aluminium compared with those plastic nightmare PCs I used to have which would crack if you looked at them funny and be dead within a year.

Thanks for the advice mate. I already sold my old one and will at least wait until the back to school sale in 2 weeks over here so I can save a little bit. But I am curious as to how these new i chips will help in what way?

I wouldn't expect more USB ports since it is a laptop and there is only a limited amount of space for ports. Frankly, with wireless devices it is less of an issue these days anyway. Hopefully they will bring USB3 on board sooner or later and that may allow them to drop the Firewire port although there will be lots of screaming I'm sure even if USB3 is much faster.

Damn right there will be lots of screaming. Many existing audio interfaces are firewire. I don't care how fast USB3 is. If there are no USB3 audio interfaces, it does me no good. I would hope Apple would keep firewire for a period of time after adding USB3. Whatever the case I would not expect USB3 in the next generation MBP.

Do we know for sure that they are releasing new macbooks in January or is that an educated guess?

It's a guess. Dunno how educated. No media event has been announced. But that doesn't mean a media event won't be announced. Nor does it mean that if a media event isn't announced, there won't be updates. But it also doesn't mean that if an media event is announced, that there necessarily will be updates.

So, in other words...there may or may not be a media event in January that either does or does not announce updated MacBook Pros. Maybe.

Price increase with Arrandale?

Let's suppose that the new chips are used by Apple to upgrade the macbook pro line and they come out over the next couple of months, would there likely be an increase in the price over the current line and if so what are your thoughts on how much. I am new to mac and I am in the market for a laptop. The current line is fine with what I will be using it for but I am in no hurry to purchase so if there will likely only be a nominal increase I would just wait, otherwise, I would just jump in now!
