next-gen CarPlay backwards compatible?

I drive a 2018 Toyota Corolla with the patch to allow the current CarPlay.
If I get a new iPhone with next-generation CarPlay, will it still continue to work in the old way?

I see no reason why it wouldn't. People (presumably) replace their phone more often than their car, so I'm sure a lot of people have newer phones in older cars.

Of course! My 14 Pro Max would support next gen CarPlay but my car does not. So I am getting what the car supports and that’s it.

Thanks, so my understanding is that the CarPlay will continue to work in the old way even if I update to next-gen CarPlay on a new phone. So, from a programming point of view, the CarPlay API to car will remain backwards compatiible. thanks!

I asked because Toyota is not listed in the announcement-- and it was not clear if that was just for the new features.

The "Next Gen CarPlay" is more dependent on the CAR. Manufacturer has to basically build the internals with multiple screens and allow your phone to basically access the car's operating system to display and control all that information

Your 2018 Corolla is out of luck unless Toyota decides to go back, update the computer to allow the access.

What would be interesting to see would be someone create an after-market kit containing a few extra displays & some sort of dongle that attaches to the car's OBD port

My car is working now with the existing CarPlay. My question was asking if the next-gen CarPlay will still work the old way in my car. The answer from "Cobold " seems to assert that it will continue to work the old way, even if the CarPlay gets updated to the next-gen version.

Yes, CarPlay will continue to work as normal. The "next-gen" applies to the Car's system, not iOS or your phone. Only certain cars will be "next-gen" compatible. CarPlay will continue to function as is for non-next-gen cars.

It would make no sense for Apple to break backwards compatibility and anger all the current car owners. You just won't get the next generation features unless your manufacturer offers an update. Depending on what that entails it may or may not happen. I have an aftermarket product that added CarPlay to my 2015 car as well as a CarPlay compatible aftermarket stereo in another car and expect they will continue to function normally. If they update the software I'd be pleasantly surprised; but I doubt it will happen unless it is an easy update. A more likely scenario is the next gen will require features that are more deeply dependent on the car's electronics for integration, but we won't know until Apple releases it. Ideally it would all be part of iOS so cars can automatically use it with no updates, at least on the one screen currently in use and not have multiple screen capability.
