At this point, I just want a reasonably priced 27-32” 5K monitor that doesn’t have a SoC or webcam. I’ll drop $999 on that and another $1600 on an M3 Max Mac Studio. And I’ll love it.

Some seem quick to remember the iMac Pro, while cool-looking, was a commercial failure - expensive workstation-grade hardware with a built-in display, with no expansion or upgrade path does not bode well.

An iMac with upgraded hardware and a "pro"/"max" version with a larger screen and slightly more powerful SoC (think Mac Mini's M2 Pro version) would float my boat tho.
except the new imac "pro" would be basically replacement for imac 27", not the old imac pro
on the other hand, releasing imac with better display than Studio Display would be one giant slap in the face of whoever bought one.

I feel reasonably certain we’ll see the M3 iMac 24 this year. I’m skeptical we’ll see an M3 iMac 27 this year as well, but surprises happen. Whether it will be called Pro or not is anybody’s guess.

At this stage I’m dead certain we won’t see any M2 iMacs, and thats fine.

A new 27 iMac “Pro” could cost somewhat less than a Mac Studio and Studio Display together. That will work for some. On the other hand why not offer a more reasonably priced 27in. display priced about half of the current Studio Display? I think lots of MacBook, Mac Mini and Mac Studio owners would welcome that.

The original 27" size was chosen because it fits more home and office desktops examples without getting too big. Start going the route of 30" and larger and some people find it too big for a desk or even at work on a lab bench.
I would think most "pros" are fine with a bit more of a desk-eating machine. Minimize those bezels and a 32" really isn't that much bigger.

I understand people not happy about apple possibly not releasing regular iMac 27”, but we have to accept the fact that there is 27” studio system… Whether studio sucks or not, it’s there so iMac pro 27” makes sense.

The possible 27 inch iMac has to be Pro and therefore cost 2 times the price of what the last 27 inch iMac cost because 27 inch is too good for normal consumers or what is Apple's reasoning here?

I’ve never been the target of the iMac, because mobility for me is everything (that’s why I mainly use an iPad Pro, and if needed, I carry my Mac mini with me), but I have friends and acquaintances who use mainly desktops, and I can see why they would like a 27” iMac.

My current monitor, the one I use for my Mac mini, is 24”, and if someday I replace it for a 4K or 5k monitor, it’s going to be a 27”. Just like 24” was the standard in the past, I feel like the 27” are more and more becoming the new standard.

So, I couldn’t care less because I’ll probably never buy an iMac, but I definitely understand the need of the 27” size. Hopefully it will come at a not huge price increase…

I don’t see them releasing a larger iMac with two different names. Just like the MacBooks, the Pro distinction is already implied in the sizes. 24” iMac. 27” (or larger) iMac Pro.

First, let’s hope they release a larger iMac at all. And black bezels please!

A 27" iMac Pro makes very little sense with the Mac Studio and Mac Studio Display combination being a better value than that 27" iMac Pro ever was. I echo the comment of what is needed is just a 27" iMac in the $1799 or so price point for people who want an iMac but want a bigger screen than 24" (like a 27" 5K display).

In mid-2022, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman suggested that Apple is working on at least two iMac models, likely using the "M3" series of chips. He said that Apple will likely launch an updated 24-inch iMac featuring the standard M3 chip in 2023 and is continuing work on a high-end iMac model:

I also still believe that Apple is working on a larger-screened iMac aimed at the professional market. I'd imagine this will use a variation of the M3 chip, likely an M3 Pro and M3 Max. That would match the chips inside of the MacBook Pro. I don't think the combination of a Mac Studio or Mac mini plus an Apple Studio Display cuts it for many pro users who want more screen real estate.model:
So, a 24" iMac and a "larger-screen" model, which is referenced throughout this article as being 27" is potentially in the works. Yet, the quote says the Mac Studio and Studio Display don't "cut it for pro users who want more screen real estate"??

wth does that mean? How does a 27" iMac Pro provide more screen real estate than a Mac Studio and 27" Studio Display?

I have an M1 iMac, but I'm ready to sell it. It's absolutely beautiful but the chip isn't powerful enough and the screen has weird restrictions... I can't set it to 50Hz to watch content from the UK properly synchronized, for example. I can't trust that the next iMac will fix this. With the low price of the M2 Pro Mac mini on the other hand, I could switch and may even come out ahead on the swap!

Your argument is misleading, the 2017 iMac Pro (EOL 2021) was a limited time substitution using Xenon processors until the 2019 Mac Pro showed up. The performance of the regular 27" iMacs even were roughy equivalent to Pro as time went on. Given I saw 27" iMacs selling for $1500 to $3000 three standard configs, this $1999 M1 Max Studio and $1599 Studio display is more expensive then at the point in time last March when 27" iMac was EOL and the Mac Studio pairing became available. BTW we should all be looking at the budget Mac Studio as why is it still a M1 Max? Ahh thats because there is no M2 Ultra yet, and the Mac Pro needs to be around for that to happen. :D

To those still holding out for a 27" iMac, as I was for all of last year, I am over the moon about my M2 MacBook Air and Studio display. Now that I'm over the sticker shock--I did manage to save $450 between the two--the combination is a joy to use. I now am trying to figure out how to give life to a ten year old iMac that is stuck on Catalina. In the future I'll only need to replace the MacBook and still have an outstanding monitor.

What I expect from Apple if they do in fact release a 27” iMac.

iMac 24” with pathetic hardware cost: $1900 after taxes.

iMac 27” with up to date current hardware cost: $2,900 after taxes.

Effectively pricing out most of their customer base? Yup.
