One of the most common Buyer's Guide related question we get asked is "Is it a good time to buy an Apple TV?"

We've never tracked the AppleTV in our buyers guide because it's a product that seems to have no regular release cycle. Apple maintains that the AppleTV is a "hobby" project, and that attitude shows in its infrequent update cycle. The AppleTV is unique in that it is more of a living room appliance whose primary purpose is to play iTunes content on your television. As a result, as long as the Apple TV can play all present iTunes content, there's no compelling reason for Apple to offer a major hardware upgrade.

The AppleTV has only seen two major hardware revisions during its lifetime. First was the original launch back in 2007 and the second was September 2010 when Apple released a smaller iOS-based version. We noted in June that iOS 5 opened the door to a true 1080p capable Apple TV, but no evidence of such a device had been seen.

9to5Mac has now spotted a reference to a yet-unreleased "Apple3,1" in the latest version of iOS 5. This suggests that Apple is working on a next generation AppleTV in its labs. The previous models have carried the codenames "AppleTV1,1" and "AppleTV2,1".

A new AppleTV could integrate Apple's new A5 processor which offers much faster graphics processing and include true 1080p support. But unless Apple plans on offering 1080p content on iTunes, that feature would be of limited use to the majority of consumers. Fortunately, Apple has been rumored to be prepping movie studios to start submitting 1080p content to iTunes.

We should note that when previous iPhone references have been found in iOS releases, we've seen a lead time of up to 15 months. So, an imminent release is not guaranteed.
Software evidence of Apple's future devices tends to appear rather early in the development process, as evidenced by iPhone3,1 appearing in iPhone OS configuration files in March 2009. That device turned out to be the iPhone 4, released 15 months later.
We also suspect that any new AppleTV may run up against Apple's future plans for television. There have been persistent rumors that Apple could be taking on the TV market at some point in the near future. The NYTimes revisited this speculation in the days following Steve Jobs' death.
But many in the tech industry contend that television is ripe for technological makeover, and that the next big challenge for Apple, after the death of Mr. Jobs, is likely to be in that area.
Last year, NYTimes' says that Apple was in negotiations over a new television subscription service but ultimately failed.

So, we can't be certain when Apple might be launching a new AppleTV, but believe it would be tied to other offerings, either 1080p HD iTunes content or another television initiative altogether.

To update the Apple Tv, or make a TV apple computer, that is the question? But for 100 bucks, I say just buy it. No reason to really wait around, because I don't see them updating it until next year.

New hardware should not be necessary for App Store support, however.

That being said, the greater graphics processing power of the A5 would be beneficial for gaming in addition to 1080p playback.

Gaming on Apple TV

I would just get the Apple TV if it supports the App Store and Angry Birds on it! Man Angry Birds on my 46 inch Samsung TV. Now thats awesome!

Apple TV with the A5 would be awesome. Damn, was hoping for it in a fall event with the iPods but I guess we'll have to wait a little while more. At least we know its in the works..

Now that Steve's gone, who is going to pursuade the networks to lower their prices for Apple's TV subscription efforts?

Apple TV may be the "hobby" at Apple HQ, but around my house it's essential! Being new parents, we skipped the summer blockbuster season... and now Apple TV plus iTunes means every week or so this fall has been summer movie night on the big TV. Similarly, Netflix, AirPlay, baby photos off the Mac as a screensaver... no hobby device here.

I've been hoping for an App Store for AppleTV. Maybe once this new hardware is released, it will happen.

Or maybe AirPlay and Display Mirroring will meet that need. Especially on upgraded hardware.

We need a second one for our household. Guess we'll hold off a little longer.

I love my Apple TV2, use it daily. Though 1080p doesn't bother me as my internet connection is only good enough for SD QUALITY movie rentals anyway.

Though Apps on the ATV would be cool, I suspect really its going to be airplay mirroring where they will keep the ATV and Apps together for now.

you can get a mac mini, and download angry birds from the mac app store!

Can't wait. I have been holding off for the next generation ATV.

We are older parents and Apple TV is essential in our house. I have a server with rapidly shrinking drive space because of the amount of TV and movies we have acquired. We do not subscribe to cable or satellite and haven't for over a year. Our tv viewing is exclusively ATV2 with netflix and youtube on the side. No hobby here.

Only problem is the remote. We now have to be about a foot in front of the unit in order for it to work. Kind of annoying.

Apple started selling the current gen. Apple TV in Finland and Sweden and quite likely in every other country that received movie rentals a while ago. Not sure if there's point buying it now though, as the new version is coming. But that could be a sign that the new version isn't coming out for the next couple or so months. Would Apple start selling a device now, if it's being replaced in week or two? Don't think so.

Roku already offers this. It comes bundled with their new device.

Personally, I think this all goes back to the A5 processor's constrained supply.

The iPhone and iPad are Apple's most important iOS products, followed by the iPod touch and finally the Apple TV. Once production of the A5 chip gets ramped up, I think we'll see spec updates to both product lines.

I'm not sure when they're going to do it, but I firmly believe Apple will offer an App Store for the Apple TV. Steve Jobs told Bloomberg "they could" do that more than a year ago, and I don't believe he was talking about AirPlay.

Just download the Remote app and you won't have to rely on the remote that comes with the ATV2. It's so much faster to type out movie names on your iPhone or iPad to watch what you want on ATV.

Go to settings and add another remote. I use my Onkyo receiver remote for my cable box, tv, receiver, and appletv.

My kids learned how to use it. Unfortunately, my wife hates it because she can't figure out the tech. She still can't figure out how to walk up to the tv and punch the button on the hdmi switch to change the input...

I'd like 1080P movies, if they were provided in good quality. There's been a few TV shows/movies I've rented from iTunes that look terrible.

As I've said before, iTunes really has to up its quality and provide more features. Apple charges about $19.99 for HD movies. That's about the price of a Blu-Ray. However, Blu-Ray has a higher resolution, better quality, all the behind-the-scenes extras, commentaries, subtitles, etc. I can understand some people having slow internet service, but Apple can still offer a (relatively) low quality version for those people.

Only thing with games, though, is how do you play? Wouldn't you need something like a Nintendo WII remote, or a touchscreen TV?

Yeah, I've been thinking about this too. A new version might just persuade
me to purchase it.

I don't know why the Apple TV hasn't been a bigger success. For $99 it's a steal! I know, it has it's limitations but I love my Apple TV.

Good! I definitely want an AppleTV now to go with my pending iPhone4S, but I'd like to see a few upgrades over the current model. 1080p and access to the iOS app store are musts. So are Thunderbolt to allow for two way HD video I/O and Bluetooth to connect wireless keyboards, mice, game controllers, etc. Given those upgrades, I'd like to see at least third party options for streaming my Mac's display to the AppleTV and a DVR. iTunes delivered content is a nice idea, but does nothing for time shifting live broadcasts, especially local stuff.
I have no interest in an Apple branded TV though - the big screen is a major investment that I only want to deal with on e every 10 years or so - keep it dumb and keep all the smarts in a little AppleTV $100 brick that I can upgrade every year or so. The only thing the TV itself needs is the display screen and a Thunderbolt interface. Unless Apple builds their own display factory, what's the point in paying for their logo to be stuck the screen?

Faster Processor would be nice. But they really need to get the appstore on this thing. They'd sell millions! I suppose the problem would be in how you'd control stuff.

Airplay is looking great for iOS5 games - that Real racing HD multiplayer for ATV looks great.... BUT a £500 controller for a TV is not really going to work for everyone. What about using the six axis sensor in a remote. like a mini Wii.

Thing is in the UK and presumably other countries they are pretty crippled. No TV Shows or Netflix. They need to sort that out.

Personally, I've hacked mine and put XBMC on it... Awesome little media player with the bonus of ATV movie rentals and Airplay.

Apps would help immeasurably, I think. (It wasn't until the App Store opened that the iPhone really started to take off, as most of us here will recall.)

It needs Hulu. It could benefit from games (although I don't know how well those would do without controllers, and who's going to use an iPhone or iPod Touch as a controller?).

There's so much potential in the hardware.

Great minds think a like.

Surely the app store will be coming to ATV!!! Its begging for apps!!

As I was opening up the forum comments that was exactly what I was thinking. AppleTV is a platform ripe for apps. I can literally imagine dozens of apps for the platform.

I'd also like to see them actually support the USB port on the device. Both as a place to buffer or store iTunes via a disk drive and as a conventional USB port to support apps with I/O. AppleTV is in many ways a computer as such it dwarves it's I/O.

Frankly Apple could see an explosion in sales if AppleTV was freely configurable to do things outside of video playback. Considering it's low cost and mass production it is a very embeddable computer. There are many uses for AppleTV sized computers that could get by easily with one USB port and a bit of storage.
