Apple's fourth-generation Apple TV will be released in October with a starting price of $149 or $199, according to 9to5Mac. The report claims that Apple will also continue selling the third-generation Apple TV for $69 as an entry-level device, although the set-top box is not expected to have support for an App Store or Siri.

The report adds that Apple's much-rumored streaming TV service will be available "as soon as next year" through a software update for both the third-generation and fourth-generation Apple TV. The web-based TV service is expected to deliver a lightweight package of about 25 channels for around $40 per month.

The new Apple TV is rumored to feature a dual-core A8 processor, an App Store with a native SDK for developers, Siri voice control, HomeKit integration, a new user interface and a redesigned remote control with motion sensors, a touchpad on the top, physical buttons on the bottom and a microphone.

Apple is expected to announce the new Apple TV at its September 9th media event.

The old Apple TV 3 should go for 20 dollars or less. It's pretty useless these days.

I'm excited for this new Apple tv, after all these years it really needs an update. I've now switched to Chromecast and thinking of buying my family a Roku. Best thing about the old Apple TV is the beamer app for OSx!

Who would buy a device released almost three years ago that will surely lose support next year?

If they're releasing the streaming service next year, and it supports ATV3, why would it lose support next year?

too much anymore that $99 is too much that seems to be the benchmark and there are too many other alternatives for it to be that high and we haven't even seen roku's next box. I have an Xbox One and once it gets HBO Now will have everything I really need

Because it's hard to believe that a device with a chip from 2011 (with only one core, no less) will be able to support many more iOS upgrades.

Who would buy a device released three-and-a-half years ago that will most likely lose support next year? They should just discontinue the device now before those who buy it complain that it's not compatible with the next upgrade.

I guess you are talking about the current Apple TV. There is no reason why it should lose functionality in the next years. And against what all the conspiracy theorists here might believe, Apple is actually quite good in support on legacy devices. I have an Apple TV 1 that still works brilliantly.

edit: I also have two Apple TV 3s and I fully expect them to function in the next two to three years. Considering for what I paid for them, that is very very reasonable.

If it's a significant upgrade compared to the 3rd-gen I have right now, I'd buy it.
I wanna be able to plug my cable in it and get rid of my other receiver though.

I think it's good of Apple to bring their streaming service to the current generation Apple TV. You know, to give people some time trying it out before they upgrade to the new model. After all, I would not go for it with just a blink. :p

Anyway, €150/€200 would be fine to me. Seems expensive, but it's not much of a difference. Especially considering it did cost €109 in the Netherlands. And since it will have storage options, much better hardware and more, I think it's quite a good deal. I'd buy it for that money. But I'll wait for a few months anyway. So there will be more apps once I get mine. :)

I just want a native plex client and I'm good. $149 is okay if it can do casual livingroom gaming as well :)

I'm not sure how I feel about casual gaming. I really thought the Wii was awful because it was underpowered from the start.

While I"m not a hardcore gamer, it would be nice to play star wars battlefront. Just depends on the controller. The only current controller I'm excited for is the Oculus controller.
