I guess you are talking about the current Apple TV. There is no reason why it should lose functionality in the next years. And against what all the conspiracy theorists here might believe, Apple is actually quite good in support on legacy devices. I have an Apple TV 1 that still works brilliantly.

edit: I also have two Apple TV 3s and I fully expect them to function in the next two to three years. Considering for what I paid for them, that is very very reasonable.
Perhaps but with the next gen aTV supporting the App Store, you have to wonder about app support on the current gen. We saw something similar with YouTube no longer functioning on older Apple TVs (because Apple no longer will update apps on those aTVs). Now, you could see either app developers or Apple killing off support of their apps even quicker since they now have a proper app store.

Hope they update it every year like the iPhone, with major and minor tweaks. The price is moot, but like the iPhone upgrades, it will keep the loyal focused. A new iPhone every 2-3 years is more costly, the service fee unpredictable (until T-Mobile broke the mold), and, the bigger (TV) screens are always the stars at home theaters.

That said, I am already on pause till the next upgrade!

The old Apple TV 3 should go for 20 dollars or less. It's pretty useless these days.

I'm excited for this new Apple tv, after all these years it really needs an update. I've now switched to Chromecast and thinking of buying my family a Roku. Best thing about the old Apple TV is the beamer app for OSx!

Apple will charge more than double for its new box than Google charges for Android TV, which does the same things?! Let's see how well that goes....

Streaming TV is wasted on someone like me -- much if it is available already though apps, but I don't care about it even when free.

Roku is fine, but it has seriously butt-ugly and primitive UI, so I never use mine :(

People don't want JUST a slick way to access TV shows.

If this new Apple TV lets people enjoy original unique content, it'll sell! That content could be games, original TV shows, or exclusive TV shows.

But if it's just a more polished way to access the exact same stuff we can already see elsewhere...? I personally don't think that will sell very well.

The Wii actually sold like hotcakes if you remember. If the price is right for casual gamers, they will jump onboard.

True, the Wii was widely successful at first. It had that novelty factor but the controller never lived up to expectations. I hope Apple puts out a better machine :)

I use it every day to stream music or video from my iPad. The only thing useless for me with AppleTV now is the Apple Music App. There's no way to stream from that app to my AppleTV (and stereo). It's one big frustrating fail that remembers me everytime that Apple Music isn't my tool to enjoy music. It just kills it. And don't let me start about the bitrate quality.

How can you not stream Apple Music to the Apple TV? I do it everyday from my iPhone.

I would really like it, if it would be able to work like an improved Nintendo View attachment 578107 WII too

I love tactile buttons, so controllers don't appeal to me. Have you seen Oculus controllers? May not be aesthetically pleasing but I think they are on the right track. Not sure if those have buttons for each finger, but it's the perfect combo for motion and non motion gaming.

Perhaps it'll be $149 and $199 to account for 2 storage options? In any case, either are reasonable given the new capabilities. I think the bigger question is how much are they going to charge for additional controllers? The usual business practice is to over-charge on accessories, but that won't help the new Apple TV grow as a gaming platform.

I have an Apple TV here, don't even know what generation. Initially I enjoyed to use it, but like most of their other software somewhere along the line they managed to screw things up. Now I'm usually watching endlessly at 'spinning wheels' (whatever i is called) and hardly gets used anymore. I don't hope with the new software we see another flawed software release (like the Apple Music one).

I'm just wondering who this is going to be marketed towards? Cable cutters seems pretty obvious if those network deals go through, but is that all? For streamers, that is a bit pricey considering the other products that are out there, including Apple's own current streaming box.

It will be interesting to see what happens come the 9th.

Oh? And why is it useless? Works fine for me. I can see the maybe the new ATV will benefit "cable cutters", but for the majority of us that still are on the full cable route, the new ATV looks "mostly useless" to me.

I'm betting even it gets an upgrade to a faster chip. Price won't change but power will.

It stutters al the time. So much, I cant listen to it anymore. Streaming HD video with better audio from apps like Youtube is no problem.

Apart form that, the quality literally hurts my ears. Try it yourself. Search for a HD (flac rip) on Youtube and compare that with the same song on Apple Music. You'll be shocked. One small detail: You need good speakers to hear the difference.

i hate my 3rd gen. it always takes forever to stream anything local from my iTunes library or i just look at a spinning wheel for like 15 minutes. netflix, hulu etc work perfectly. just not apples own stupid itunes airplay. i went back to hdmi between macbook and tv to watch movies or tv shows from my hdd

"The report adds that Apple's much-rumored streaming TV service will be available "as soon as next year" through a software update for both the third-generation and fourth-generation Apple TV."

If they're releasing the streaming service next year, and it supports ATV3, why would it lose support next year?

It probably won't next year but it will lose support once they shift over to 4k streaming.

Personally I am beginning to doubt a streaming service "package". If in fact an App Store is unveiled then we all automatically get a la carte programming to buy anyway. Why would Apple even get into "content" deals etc etc when it's going to let ALL the content guys sell us their "apps" for programming? That's as a la carte as it gets.
