I would think quad core will definitely happen. I have just seen over at Dell they are selling Studio laptops with Intel Core i7-720QM. Which is dubbed by them as "Fastest Mobile processor on the planet" but I don't know if that is true. If Dell are doing this, Apple should be as well as things are not looking to great for them with Windows 7 coming out which I personally find awesome.

Blu ray? Well lets face it - Jobs can call it a bag of hurt and people can say there is no need for it on a computer but there is certainly a market for it so lets hope its a not too expensive upgrade for those that want it.

When to buy

Don't know if this matters. I don't know about all the specifics of the new mac, but I went to the apple store to buy one the other day, and they were out. The apple salesman then told me, "It's good we're out anyway. Come back on Tuesday, wink, wink."

I guess that has to be when they get the new ones. That would be tomorrow lol.

Are you sure he didn't have a nervous twitch?

The guy at the store seriously annunciated "wink wink"?

HP just released a slew of new desktops, all-in-ones, and laptops on their site today. AIOs now starting at $800. Dell to follow suit, I'm sure.

Apple had better get with the program.

IF that was true its good and bad news.
Good: because I want an iMac so I don't have to use my aging PowerBook G4 except when I'm at Uni
Bad: that will mean there is no Keynote address which means the chances of a significant upgrade are not high. and considering this is my Wishlist for new macs:
• Quad core
• Much better graphics (newer than 4850)
• New mouse
• LED screens
• Blu-ray
• Matt screen?
I can see myself being disappointed in some way! :(

wink wink

The guy at the store seriously annunciated "wink wink"?

This is how it played out. My husband took me to our favorite apple store to get me a new mac for sweetest day lol. We ask to see if they have any in stock. The apple guy says, "Let me go check the back. We have been running low all week." He comes back and tells me they are out. He starts saying something to my husband about coming back Tuesday. I say, "why what's going on on Tuesday?" He says, "Well this is a little hush hush, so shhhh. It's good we're out anyway. Come back on Tuesday, wink, wink." He actually said "wink, wink" lol.

We told him we live 40 minutes away, bt he said we wouldn't regret coming back. Then I check here to see what was going on, and read about the Quad Mac. So I'm just putting 2 and 2 together. I really don't know what's going on. I'm calling them tomorrow to see though. I'll let you guys know if it's anything good.

Well if it is as you say, you probably won't need to call them tomorrow. We will all find out when Apple updates the store!

Reports Fake Steve Jobs

"We’re going to have news tomorrow
Can’t tell you what, obviously. But there’s something brewing. Gruber doesn’t know about it, but the people we care about are being briefed in advance. Stay close to your Mac or iPhone, and have your credit card ready."

HP just announced some new notebooks using the quad-core i7 Mobile. However, the earliest build dates are listed as Oct. 28 and 29 with delivery some days later (this agrees with some dates I saw from Dell about one week ago). Thus, I'm still thinking that the reason Apple hasn't announced anything yet is that they are waiting on the chips and manufacturing so that they can have units available shortly after they make the announcement.

Interestingly, HP's new Core i7 Mobile notebooks do not have internal optical storage which makes me think that they couldn't fit the Core i7 Mobile in a standard-sized, 15" notebook without leaving the drive out. The prices with the Core i7 720QM start at $1800 (you can get the external CD/DVD drive for an additional $75).

Probably four or five ways.

If anything is announced tomorrow (Tuesday, Oct. 20) it will probably be minor tweaks to the Mac Mini or plastic MacBook (configuration and/or price changes). Besides, sooner or later the MacBook will have to switch over to the Mini DisplayPort.

However, I still think we'll see newly redesigned, quad-core iMacs in the next two weeks (shipping).

Give me a quad-core, a matte screen and the ability to easily upgrade the RAM to 8 or 12Gb and I'll have the perfect Mac to replace my old Quad G5 Power Mac. I don't need a pro-level 6 grand workstation anymore, but I'll be damned if I'm going to downgrade to a dual core.

PS: For those asking 'who needs 4 cores anyway?' those 4 cores let me use a resource hog like Firefox while burning a DVD, checking email and doing something else intensive like running an emulator... with no slowdown. I have to use two cores at work and it's snail-like at times.

I could not agree more!!!

Quad-core at the top end, even if it means a fatter case.... or give us the MacPromini that's a semi-expandable (ram, real video card, 2nd 3.5" HDD) mini tower with no screen.
