Something is pushing this upset in Apple's release cycle. I stick with 12-18 months. Then again pay more attention to Intel, AMD, and nVidia's schedules.
Competition?

Apple doesnt stop supporting its older devices for at least three years.
Besides giving the mini a retina display, what else are the gonna do?
They can only keep making it thinner for so long.
There was a time when that was a true statement. Apple broke this unwritten rule when it didn't allow users of the original iPad to update to IOS 6. The original iPad was released 4/3/2010 and wasn't discontinued until 3/2/2011. IOS 6 came out 9/9/2012. Basically that means someone who purchased a new iPad from Apple in March of 2011 would have an unupdatable tablet in only 16 months.
Maybe, but not with all the storage sizesthe iPad2 is only sold with 16GB wifi or 16GB wifi/cellular and it would be reasonable to expect a bottom end iPad mini to have the same limited SKUs.
The fact there is a new iPad out that is newer than the ipad 4 then this means that the ipad 4 is out dated by ipad 5 and when you say 'Name me one thing the ipad 4 can do which the iPad 3 cannot do. One thing.' that proves my point of the fact that they are milking us for money. may be i elaborated about the outdated thing in a unclear way but still im not going to by a iPad 3 when i know there is a ipad 4 around just for the sake of saying "Name me one thing the ipad 4 can do which the iPad 3 cannot do. One thing."
What is the big deal? Let's say Apple releases iPad design changes and other major upgrades (e.g. Retina) in Spring, and spec bumps and minor upgrades (e.g. lightning connector) in Fall, just before the Holidays. How is that a bad thing? This cycle helps Apple keep current and competitive with the rapidly advancing electronics market. Basically, they have been doing something similar for years with their laptops.
Last Spring, I replaced my orginal iPad with an iPad 3. For Christmas, I bought my wife an iPad 4. She loves it. If a new model comes out this Spring, it won't make a bit of difference to her or me. We'll just continue to enjoy our tablets and upgrade when needed (probably replace every two years).
Honestly, if this is a problem, it is only a "First World" problem.

As faster iPads come out, apps will be written for the iPads with more memory and a faster chip, so your current iPad will become too slow and incapable of running those apps.
Don't believe it? Ask an iPad 1 or iPad 2 owner.
So, you should just wait until September to get the next, next iPad. Or maybe wait until March 2014 to get the next, next, next iPad. Yea, that's the one to get.

what a smug and ignorant comment
maybe I should list all the things I own in my signature too? Maybe I would feel more important. fkn ridiculous
Bull. iPad 2 runs great. The iPad 1 is slow because the chip is slow, not because it's abandoned by app developers.
The fact of the matter is as follows;
Your current iPad will never stop working because it doesn't get the newest iOS. My 2nd gen iPod Touch still runs 90% of apps and it's still on 4.2.1. iOS 6 was a minor upgrade, and even an original iPad with iOS 5 is still incredibly usable. Please, tell me an app that refuses to run on an iOS 5 device, and specifically requires iOS 6 (nothing preinstalled). The people upset by this on this forum are the children who need to have the bragging rights of having the newest generation Apple product. It's not about usability, its about YOU being smug.
Note: There's nothing wrong with wanting to have bragging rights. But don't get mad at Apple for being competitive.
I may regret saying this but once the Ipad Mini 2 with retina display comes out I should be done buying Ipads period! I can be very happy for a long, long time with a Mini with retina!![]()
There just milking people for there money i have just got my ipad 4 about 6 weeks ago and now its going to be outdated by apples new ipads its just getting to much and to stupid to keep realising new ipads with out any major change so what ipad 4 is twice as fast as ipad 3 it doesnt matter no app uses all of the ipad 4 processor power.
