Apple doesnt stop supporting its older devices for at least three years.

There was a time when that was a true statement. Apple broke this unwritten rule when it didn't allow users of the original iPad to update to IOS 6. The original iPad was released 4/3/2010 and wasn't discontinued until 3/2/2011. IOS 6 came out 9/9/2012. Basically that means someone who purchased a new iPad from Apple in March of 2011 would have an unupdatable tablet in only 16 months.

My iOS buying has been pretty much upgrading every year

iphone 3g--> 3gs --> 4 --> 4s --> 5
Ipad 1 --> 2 -->3

Once the ipad 4 was announced I decided I'm going to stop this trend of selling and upgrading every year (typically at a loss of 20%). I will now be upgrading every 2 years since my ipad 3 is still perfect and runs fast enough for me.
I won't be upgrading to the iphone 5S as well when that's released.

Most of yall who say people are complaning about fast product refreshes are wrong. Its not good business and not good from a consumer standpoint. Will it sell yeah it will but not as much let me give an example for those who dont know: the ipad 2 and 3 when released had lines outside blocks long and sold out ipad 4 was never out of stock since day one and could be purchased whenever u felt like it. People were not buying it because it was too quick. it would be even worst this time if they do decide to release it especially with no real new features and the same ol software. They only do this cause its no contract. Carriers would not let somebody release the same phone a few months a part. Android just does it by having a bunch of different devices with different naming schemes but never the same model. And yeah your old ipad would still work but it still a slap in the face to have them release a new product right after u just bought yours. Its not good business. How would u like it if you got a ps3 when it came out and a few months later ps4 came out or they released a new camera or some computer hardware that was the best and u spent your money only for them to say nah here we got something better a couple months later i could go on and on with the examples. Point is its not a good business move and most companys dont do these things. And then apple has to have a whole conference saying there latest item and say how great it is not even mentioning anymore there previous model and tryna make it seem as though u should upgrade.
There intentions is for all to buy it and it doesnt look good. Just refer to my ipad 4 sales earlier in my statement and watch what happens if they release a new one in march. Sales will be down double just watch

Besides giving the mini a retina display, what else are the gonna do?

They can only keep making it thinner for so long.

I may regret saying this but once the Ipad Mini 2 with retina display comes out I should be done buying Ipads period! I can be very happy for a long, long time with a Mini with retina!:D

Why should Apple update the iPad every six months?

What have we consumers to gain when Apple updates iPad every six months instead of every twelve months?

What has Apple to gain by updating the iPad every six months instead of every twelve months?

It was not meant that Apple should update the iPhone 4 (3S) in November 2012. So it may well be that we'll see an update of the real iPad 4 (5) in March.

But it would be absurd that it would update the iPad every six months.

Well, if Apple updates the Mini with Retina this time, I will be definitely heading down to the local store to buy one... That's all I have to say.

That was me, except I bought it in February 2011. I knew a new iPad was around the corner but it was on sale and I couldn't refuse.

Maybe, but not with all the storage sizes—the iPad2 is only sold with 16GB wifi or 16GB wifi/cellular and it would be reasonable to expect a bottom end iPad mini to have the same limited SKUs.

Think Apple will eventually do this

iPad Mini - 16GB, 32GB, 64GB

iPad - 32GB, 64GB, 128GB

The fact there is a new iPad out that is newer than the ipad 4 then this means that the ipad 4 is out dated by ipad 5 and when you say 'Name me one thing the ipad 4 can do which the iPad 3 cannot do. One thing.' that proves my point of the fact that they are milking us for money. may be i elaborated about the outdated thing in a unclear way but still im not going to by a iPad 3 when i know there is a ipad 4 around just for the sake of saying "Name me one thing the ipad 4 can do which the iPad 3 cannot do. One thing."

Sounds like a personal problem to me. Don't blame apple for your irrational obsession with having the best and latest technology. I still have an iPhone 4 - and it works fine and I can still use 99% of the apps that comes out.

Release cycles

Time to start a reasonable cycle of product updates to prevent months of time passing where buyers are waiting for the new product. Also, do NOT change imac design and then pull all of the stock and have nothing to sell for well over a month!

What is the big deal? Let's say Apple releases iPad design changes and other major upgrades (e.g. Retina) in Spring, and spec bumps and minor upgrades (e.g. lightning connector) in Fall, just before the Holidays. How is that a bad thing? This cycle helps Apple keep current and competitive with the rapidly advancing electronics market. Basically, they have been doing something similar for years with their laptops.

Last Spring, I replaced my orginal iPad with an iPad 3. For Christmas, I bought my wife an iPad 4. She loves it. If a new model comes out this Spring, it won't make a bit of difference to her or me. We'll just continue to enjoy our tablets and upgrade when needed (probably replace every two years).

Honestly, if this is a problem, it is only a "First World" problem.

The only one who would like to upgrade as often as possible is Apple themselves. It's Apple that makes money to upgrade as often as possible.

Apple upgrade their laptops during the year, but what is the upgrades bump up prossecor and other small updates.

What is the reason to update every six months? Why would a private person want such as an iPad, to be updated every six months?

funny

As faster iPads come out, apps will be written for the iPads with more memory and a faster chip, so your current iPad will become too slow and incapable of running those apps.

Don't believe it? Ask an iPad 1 or iPad 2 owner.

So, you should just wait until September to get the next, next iPad. Or maybe wait until March 2014 to get the next, next, next iPad. Yea, that's the one to get.

Bull. iPad 2 runs great. The iPad 1 is slow because the chip is slow, not because it's abandoned by app developers.

The fact of the matter is as follows;

Your current iPad will never stop working because it doesn't get the newest iOS. My 2nd gen iPod Touch still runs 90% of apps and it's still on 4.2.1. iOS 6 was a minor upgrade, and even an original iPad with iOS 5 is still incredibly usable. Please, tell me an app that refuses to run on an iOS 5 device, and specifically requires iOS 6 (nothing preinstalled). The people upset by this on this forum are the children who need to have the bragging rights of having the newest generation Apple product. It's not about usability, its about YOU being smug.

Note: There's nothing wrong with wanting to have bragging rights. But don't get mad at Apple for being competitive.

I would guess over half of the people that regularly post on this site list their tech equipment. It is a very common practice. I always thought it added context to people's comments, since you have an idea of what other equipment they are using. So, if it offends you...i suggest you go to another site.

If you find my comments smug and ignorant, that's fine...no problem. Nevertheless, I still think it is absurd to whine about semiannual updates to tech equipment given the competitive and rapidly changing nature of the industry.

My iPad 1 has absolutely been abandoned by app developers. I routinely find I can't get the latest apps.

Not that I blame them. Why shouldn't they take advantage of the new stuff iOS 6 has?

Isn't the app concern more of a function of ios release cycle rather than hardware release cycle? I mean, a semiannual iPad release cycle doesn't really change when the ios will be updated.

Also, if there is a Fall hardware update, would not those upgrades have shown up anyway at the Spring update?

Why would Apple so readily update a product that is in such high demand(Re:iPad mini)? It's still a 2 week wait for shipping...

This sounds like rubbish to me.

Agree. And I have to assue many feel the same. This will put Apple in a strange spot. What can they offer after retina?
Faster chips? For the full size- yes. The mini...not so much.

The mini just needs retina and it will be a completed work of art.
Very few will feel the need to upgrade.

The people that bought the ipad mini and are upset about this are selfish. What about the people that didn't buy the ipad mini because they were waiting for the version with retina screen? You want them to wait even longer so you get to have some small unjustifiable happiness?

I love my Mini, and I'd LOVE a retina Mini in March!

Unfortunately, its flat not going to happen for all sorts of reasons. The well discussed technical reasons, and the small matter of Apple wanted to milk at least another six months out of Mini 1 sales. Seriously, why the **** would they supersede a product that has six months more strong sales in it? I know the Mini is old tech, but do you think it cost nothing in r&d and manufacture time? Apple like money, and a 6 month upgrade to the mini makes no financial sense, and this is disregarding the unlikely emergence of a physically identical Mini with same battery life and more power hungry screen. Remind me, who's mass producing 2048x1536 7.9" screen in massive quantities right now? Don't cite 1080p displays like the J-Butterfly phone, they don't have to have 2+ million units ready to ship at launch. Good grief, there's some myopic people out there.

One six month iPad cycle and Apple are apparently 6 months every time now, lol. There's all sorts of legitimate reasons why the iPad 4 hit so soon after the 3 - lightning, CPU finally ready, 3’s gpu not ideal for the res (although, v happy 3 owner here), realigning to an Xmas release - but I'm yet to hear a similar cogent argument for a March Mini. So much stead is placed on what some random analyst says, crikey.

There just milking people for there money i have just got my ipad 4 about 6 weeks ago and now its going to be outdated by apples new ipads its just getting to much and to stupid to keep realising new ipads with out any major change so what ipad 4 is twice as fast as ipad 3 it doesnt matter no app uses all of the ipad 4 processor power.

Your iPad will not be outdated.. calm down. It's like saying your 2011 model Subaru is outdated when the 2012/13/14 model is released.
