Why don't they just release it today. We know almost everything about it.

FedEX hasn't yet perfected their instant delivery shipping system, so not all (if any) Apple stores will have them in stock just yet.
FedEx really should get Richard Dean Anderson's help.

LOL. Well, not the same size battery, obviously. But why can't similar battery technology be shrunk down in proportion to these phones?

What makes you think they're not the same technology? The question is; do you really want a bigger battery and everything that entails?

Will it be backwards compatible with older docks?!

I need it to work with my car stereo!!!

I’m sure it will be fine: Apple has never changed the physical compatibility, and has only changed certain functions rarely in order to add new features (like better video out).

(I’d still like to see the photo of the new cable—I couldn’t find it at the link.)

I'd prefer to be able to swap out the battery myself and put in a spare, but that's not happening. As for your first question, perhaps things will change with the upcoming iPhone. But I find it odd that the iPad and MacBooks can run for 10 hours on a single charge, yet a lot of people all over the web have claimed that the iPhone is lucky to make it through a full workday even without heavy usage. If power consumption in the iPad and iPhone is proportional to their size, then it would stand to reason that the battery life would be identical, if that makes sense. Again, perhaps that will be revealed at WWDC with the iPhone getting the new processor and a new battery.

16% more?
I wonder what that actually translates to in real world usage.
Hope it's more than just an hour.

The 3GS battery was 4.51 Watt hours, which is ~1200mAh.

The new battery is 5.25 Watt hours, which is ~1400mAh.

We don't know the power requirements of the new phone, so it's hard to calculate what the extra will buy us.

For example, if the new phone used the same power as the 3GS (doubtful), that would be 5 hours x 116% = 5.8 hours of 3G talk time.

On my 3GS, I get through the day fine with normal usage and then some.

If I forget to charge it, I will usually still have around 40-50% battery the following day when I wake up, so it's not too bad (this is in Houston where AT&T has excellent coverage, thus the phone does not have to constantly hunt for a good signal, so your mileage will vary if you're in an area where the signal is spotty).

Running on OS 4.0 beta 4, battery life seems a tad better (except a couple of times when an app seemed to not have shut down correctly and I went through a full charge in about 5 hours).

That being said, right now I'm at 65% which is a bit lower than usual, but still not bad considering that the workday is almost over.

I wonder if the increased capacity will translate to much more battery life?

It may merely compensate for the higher-res screen and added functions. But, if the rumors are true and the lower-power A4 is in there as well, we may yet see a pretty decent bump.

Thanks. Perhaps those that have such awful battery life are in areas where their phones are searching for signals. The only time my current phone ran through its battery life in less than a full day was when I was on Yahoo's campus for a week, where apparently Sprint's signal is extremely weak.

Os 4

Well, so much for hardware. Anyone heard anything about a Beta 5 or a Master? It is Tuesday after all!!!:p

I doubt we'll get it this week since we're so close to WWDC.

The updates hit around noon PST, but beta 4 two weeks ago was released pretty late, I think around 4 or 5 PM PST, so there may still be one in the pipe if they are to release one more before Monday's announcement.

It was later last week. So hard to say I agree. Especially since I am hoping they will release the 4.0 next week even if there is not a new phone immediately. It would be great to play with it for awhile on the 3GS.

pretty soon, we will be able to build our own before they are officially released :eek::eek::eek:

When I was reading this story on the front page I said to myself, "I wonder how many forum posts there will be before somebody makes a joke about how we'll be able to build our own next gen iPhone."

Turns out: 1.

As an Electrical Engineer, I have my doubts about this being legitimate

As an electrical engineer, I have my doubts about this being legitimate. If you notice, the photograph of the battery says 5.25 W/hr. Batteries are not measured in W/hr, nor would 5.25 W/hr be sufficient to do anything. 1 W = 1 J/s, therefore, 5.25 W/hr = 0.00146 J, which is pretty much nothing.

Batteries are typically measured in mAh. A battery of 5.25 Whr (not W/hr) would be typical of a battery with a capacity of approximately 1400 mAh, which sounds about right for this new iPhone.

I question why a manufacturer would stamp W/hr on their battery. And if it is legitimate, I would question the quality of their battery if they can't even get the units correct.

You know I hope you are right. I have just been reflecting and have decided that Gizmodo, the Vietnam site and this Czech site have pretty much screwed up the anticipation I have enjoyed the last 2 years in waiting for the WWDC. What pleasure do they take or what do they think they are accomplishing in ruining the surprise for everyone. It reminds me of the time I discovered my Christmas presents before the big day. Christmas was just not the same that year. What do we have but anticipation. I hope all these supposed prototypes are not the real thing. OK, enough slobbering.

Batterylife has been the only real day to day pain for me with the 3gs (wouldn't mind it being a bit more speedy too) - so hopefully the bump in battery capacity will be enough. Either way I'm definitely getting the 4G/HD model as soon as it's out.

Surprises are fun. But these new iPhones will DO so much more for me (especially coming from a plain old 3G) that I think owning one will actually be more rewarding than the surprise would have been :)
