Hopefully that back will be like a thinly rubberized aluminium. I have a Sigg water bottle with a coating like that, you could set a bomb off next to it and it wouldn't show scratches. Same coating over plastic would still be good, as long as it doesn't look too scratched too soon I'll be happy.

cant wait to see the real stuff...
when is the announcement from apple in june??

The announcement should be on June 8th at WWDC. 10a.m.

I kinda like the matte black defiantly won't be getting the white. I've heard that they show cracks much easier. Still kinda wish they'd go back to a metal back of some sort even though the reception is not as good.

Has anyone heard if they are going to be using a N based Wifi chip. I really want to turn my Linksys Dual band router in to just N instead of one radio for N and one for my iPhone. . .

Can't be aluminum. There is no way that an iPhone will ever have a metal back again because of the signal loss and the necessity for an antenna cover or more extreme wiring of the antennas into the headphone jack ring, the chrome bezel, the buttons...just not worth it.

I guess thats end of my wet dreams about front camera and iChat.
Well...need to wait with my 3G next 12 months; see what Apple will come up with next summer then.

So is the apple logo a mirrored metalish finish like the current one, or is it like a white plastic? The picture is kind of hard to tell. I would imagine it's like the current model though.

Maybe the logo is the camera flash!

j/k obviously

I am almost 100% certain that the logo on the back will not be just a glowing logo, but it will be used for the camera flash.

Apple isn't going to make a device that has a front-facing camera because it would mean making more than just two phones for the world - China and everyone else. The at&t network cannot handle video calls and Apple isn't going to increase their costs to create three different models outside of capacities.

Finally matte rubberized again

It has been since the good old days of the Ericsson t68 that I have been waiting for a phone to have matte rubberized back.So much easier to hold, to put on a table without scratching it's back, don't need a case..
But I am still longing some improvements in sw..Hope that they will come with the new capacity and hw speed (gps turn by turn with downloadable maps, higher res screen,iWork and iLife)

Another thing I EXPECT from WWDC is Aperture 3 but this is a whole different story alltogether..

I was hoping for flash, not for taking photos (although that would be useful) but because sometimes when its dark you need a light

Still, I'm all for a matte back and 32GB
Now only if I can find out when or if O2 will let me upgrade...

This is a major do want, but I will definitely have to see how white would look with the matte.

agreed. I want a white one, or a colored one. I'm not a fan of black. Nor do I want my boyfriend and I to have the same... that could get confusing.

EDIT: Incase has a matte white slider, guess it would probably look similar to that.

I want! I want! I want! I want! I love the matte finish. I'm sick of gloss. If this next iPhone doesn't crack, then I'm ALL OVER IT! I'll be getting one for sure if this is the case (pun intended).

They may not say anything about the hardware at WWDC, period. (They may have a separate late June Apple event to announce the new iPhone. If they do announce it, I doubt they will discuss the different versions.

they announced the 3G last year at WWDC. I see no reason why they'd have a separate event.

Upgrade from iPhone 3G

I bought the 3G the day it came out last year. I was a new ATT customer at the time, but now I want the new iPhone this summer. Does anyone know how upgrading from the 3G will work. Will we have to pay full price? Or will we get the subsidized price?

I don't this would happen as that would require a 2nd event. Meaning renting out another place, sending out invites, getting press together. It would just be easier/more cost effective to unveil at WWDC.

Also..

Someone on here said "Bring Back Matte".

Well here you go. I'm already in line.

Matte = great

I have an iphone 2g in a clip-on case made of this kind of rubberised plastic. It's great - after months of heavy use, the only marks it shows are a little polishing around the corners. The aluminium under it would have the same polishing plus scratches, and gloss plastic would have scratches, so I reckon it's tougher that either iphone.

The main thing though is the feel - without the case, i'm forever dropping the phone because it's so slippy. The 3G is better, but not much. But with a rubberised case, it almost sticks to your hand. And no, it doesn't stick to your trouser pockets. It's not 'sticky' or anything, just not at all slippy.

Could be held on the Apple campus and be press only though, I wouldn't be suprised

I believe 1st gen iphone customers could upgrade to 3G by simply extending their contract by 2 years. I imagine they would do the same...

Probably you are right...but the thing is here in europe we got faster networks already which easily can handle video and that damn AT&T of yours slowing down Apple with their new features, which again slow all progress for rest of the globe. Very good example of this is Slingplayer; AT&T cried out loud that won't be able to handle properly, despite fact that BB and other smart phones stream that app over 3G anyway.
In one word its a bit silly that US is left behind with this; I thought you are the leader in that sort of technology:confused:

No, they remained on the same contract as their original iPhone. There was no extension.

The rumor going around now is at at&t crippled SlingPlayer because they may have their own service for u-verse coming out down the road. Silly because it screws everyone else, but that's what you get for getting in bed with the telcos. And I need to ask this - how many people would actually use video calls on their cell phone?

We've never been the leader in cellular technology. Hell, we're still using TDMA in some parts of the country and that network is ancient.

Ugh.. Still plastic:mad: Anyway, the upgraded 3g will ofcourse be awesome.

I would like all those complaining about plastic to please go look of the phrase Faraday cage on the Wiki of your choice.

There's a reason the original iPhone had a plastic strip on the back and the original iPod Touch had a plastic tab.

The iPod touch still has a plastic tab. There is no way that Apple is going back to metal.
