I seriously do not think that the next iPhone will be called the iPhone 4G.
First, it would be misleading because ATT will take awhile to roll out 4G data network. Secondly, 4 is an unlucky number in asian cultures and who want to alienate such a large customer base because of a naming faux pa. Third, iPhone HD would better describe the iPhones capabilities if it does indeed come with a larger resolution screen, and a 5MP cam.

13 is an unlucky number in the U.S. and that didn't stop SquareEnix from launching Final Fantasy XIII just recently.

The HD part makes sense, but sounds kind of tacky to me.

Who knows what Apple will call it, we'll just have to wait and find out.

Relax guy, apple, the final say on naming their own products, have not officially even named the device yet. Wait until there's a name before going on a rampant tirade. If u want to get worked up over a name get worked up over the internal N90 name. Sheesh. Some people.

Ha ha I am a well informed Internet savvy reader who has come to conclude that I know exactly all the information I need to cast judgment on a product that I have no involvement in and I'm infuriated by names that are not official but seem to come from other valid sources of information, most of them people like me that have just as much a clue to super secret things as much as I do and none of these things agree with anything I believe in so I'm going to complain about it on an Internet discussion board as if it were valid truths and facts. Brilliant!!!

I think it will be named after what it most closely resembles...

The New iPhone Ice Cream Sandwich (ice cream not included)

This has been gone over in other threads but for the "slow" folks around let me break it down..... When people say 4g they mean 4th generation, not 4g network. Got it now?

You should really come up with something more original, putting up a pic of an ice cream sandwich is so last week.

Yeah, there are sooo many ice cream sandwich pics in the forums. I couldn't resist... I just had to jump on that bandwagon.

I officially apologize to all 5000 ice cream sandwich pic posters that I copied. You are the originals, and my personal heroes! :D

Apple, apparently.

Maybe Asians are more superstitious than I, but I wouldn't mind someone numbering the 4th revision of a product #4, the 7th as #7, the 13th as #13, etc. In fact it really annoys me that there's no 13th street in town. It really annoys me whenever I think 14th is two blocks from 12th and miss my turn.

I like the name iPhone HD. I hope that not only it has HD video recording, but also a higher resolution screen. Only two weeks left and we′ll know. I can′t wait!!! :)

why would they call it iPhone HD? The only things which could be high definition (HD) on the iPhone are the screen, the camera, or video recording.

The screen will not be HD. A res of 1280 * 720 on a 3.5" display? Nope. Not gonna happen.

The camera is already more than full HD! 1920 * 1080 is about 2MP. I'd bet that a vast majority of users won't even notice the change between 3 and 5 MP

The only thing which could actually be HD is video recording. If it is, it'll either be of atrocious quality, or it will chew up space on the phone in a tremendous hurry.

not another one of these threads lol there was already a semi-big thread on the name. Since the iPhone has no ifficial name why does it matter about the name? calling if iPhone 4G isn't misleading it stands for 4th Generation, I cant call it iPhone HD as I have not seen any solid leak info to say it will deffinately have HD capabilities

Ummm yeah.... there was an entire thread with people posting several different pics of ICS. Nice try though.

If you think about it, the new iPhone will be 3rd generation, not 4th.

iPhone - 1st Generation
iPhone 3G and 3GS - 2nd Generation
iPhone (New) 3rd Generation

There was only a hardware boost in the 3G to 3GS.

I still don't understand why people want to call it a 4G.
I mean I understand that Sprint has a data network of 4G.
And I understand some people think it should ALSO mean 4th Generation.
But that leads to confusion.

What kind of phone do you have? Oh, I have a 4G. Uh..sprint or apple?

Here's an example of doing something like that.

I'll pick you up in my Ferrari. You have a Ferrari? No, its a 4th generation Ford Pinto. But Ferrari is just the code name for it.

This is why calling 2 or more items the same name can not only lead to confusion, it also isn't a smart marketing idea. You want your product to stand out, be whole and separately identifiable. Lawsuits come out of brand confusion.

Well, there were hardware changes in each revision, (even if it was just a slight clockspeed boost, or a 3G radio). We might not consider the 3G to 3GS a big hardware leap, but Apple tends to count any hardware revision to be a Generation, so that would put the new iPhone on the 4th generation by their counting.

So, the new iPhone could be considered 4th Gen also. But the iPhone 3G was definitely NOT the 3rd generation, so calling the new iPhone '4G' is wrong.
iPhone 4 could be correct. iPhone HD or iPhone 4HD would probably make the most sense. They wouldn't want to use 4G because it would make it sound like it had a 4G radio, which it does not. And when AT&T does get their 4G network up (around next year), Apple will want to release the iPhone 4G. And saying 3G-HD or something similar would make it sound very dated.

3GS came with hardware changes making it a new generation of iPhone so there for next iPhone will be 4th generation you cant hide from it it's true :p

Your concern for the "slow" folk is touching but that's exactly the point: it would be a poor choice of names because it has two meanings--4th generation and 4G network.

Got it?
