From iLounge:

It may be hard to believe, but from what we’ve now heard from multiple sources, it’s true: the fourth-generation iPod nano will look like… a Microsoft Zune. Well, sort of.

Contradicting speculation that Apple was planning to transform the new nano into a miniature iPod touch, complete with a smaller touchscreen, we’ve been told that this year’s nano upgrade will go in a different direction. Described by one source as looking like “a Zune Flash… or whatever it’s called,” the new nano has a vertically (tall) oriented display with a Click Wheel underneath, preserving the button-based control scheme that users have found easiest to use without looking down at the screen. The new nano’s screen will gain the same 1.5:1 widescreen aspect ratio as the iPhone and iPod touch, versus the 1.33:1 ratio of the prior iPod nano and iPod classic, and you’ll rotate the device to watch videos on it.

To fit the screen and Click Wheel neatly together, the new nano will adopt a form factor that shifts away from the almost square dimensions of the 2007 third-generation nano back towards the general shape of the first- and second-generation models. As one of our sources noted, it’s a surprise that the new nano will be bigger than the prior model, but the goal appears to be preservation of all of the prior model’s usability while adding a bigger screen, and there aren’t many other ways to accomplish that goal.

Our sources also indicated that rumors that the device will have a multi-colored body are most likely inaccurate. A single-colored anodized aluminum frame akin to prior iPod nanos will apparently be used, with each nano offered in one color. Obviously, we’ll see what the real story is when Apple introduces the new nano later this year, but our sources are extremely confident in the accuracy of these details.

Hmm...

These guys Backstage reports are usually accurate.

I was horrified when I saw the squat iPod nano but as soon as I saw one in the flesh I bought one.

Gonna need to see these "in the metal." Before I pass judgement.

Okay, I swear I've seen a picture of that supposed fourth generation iPod nano in one of the old Apple mockup threads. And I also remember people bitching because it looked like a Zune. This doesn't seem to reliable to me...
Plus, it just looks like a second generation iPod nano with a longer vertical screen.

I prefer the form factor of the first two Nano models.

The third one, is a bit squarish for me and harder to hold.

If the 4G one is like the 2G one (best case of all IMHO) but a bit taller to facilitate a larger screen and more memory, like the one in the picture above, that would be nice.

If the screen is a rectangle, why not move the click wheel 90 degrees since a majority of people would hold it horizontally

Next-Generation iPod nano to be Taller?

Zune on left, artist rendition of Nano on right. From iLounge

iLounge reports that the next generation of iPod nano may sport a taller screen, matching the iPhone and iPod touch's aspect ratio of 1.5:1 and up from the 1.33:1 aspect ratio found in the current iPod nano.
A vertically-oriented screen suggests that videos would be viewed with the iPod nano turned sideways. iLounge draws comparisons between the new design to Microsoft's Zune MP3 player.

iLounge's sources also indicate that a recent rumor of multicolored iPod nanos is "most likely inaccurate" and that each version of the new iPod nano, presumably differing in storage capacity, will be offered in only a single color.

Thank god.

Mine is so uncomfortable to hold, the scroll wheel is way too small in comparison to the screen. Hopefully it looks more like some of the earlier mockups of the ipod video.

I figure itd be easy to write the sftware to make the track wheel sensors change which way is straight up by a simple script. Using an accelerometor. Which actually makes lots of sense.

What im wondering is what about the play/pause/menu buttons??

Its possible apple makes those buttons LCD lit up...and when you rotat the device, the device senses that an re-arranges the positionin of th buttons

I think that would be pretty neat...

If an iPod nano were built like this, it will remind me of a Zune.

I was thinking the same exact thing. Expect no ugly brown red or pink. It will have the apple design and yes it may be red and pink, but it will be a better hue.

I agree. like the ipod touch/iphone has. You touch the screen and the contols are brought up..

Guess people really hate the 3G ipod nano. I dont have a problem with it. its not that fat....

The wheel is programmable. you can hold the wheel in one hand and scroll with your finger up or down on the screen. In otherwords the screen is multi-touch and the wheel moves with the rotation. Makes it easier to navigate vertical items in the vertical position and flick your finger in the horizontal position.

Just watch.;)

[edit] Here's the patent :

I like the brown/green color scheme on the Zune :X

sorry. :p

I'm interested to see how these'll look though! And how they'll sell.

If Apple is going to incorporate iPhone and iPod Touch features into lower-end iPod models they mayas well jump-the-gun now, discontinue the lower-end models and toss in an iPod Touch Clip, an iPod Touch Nano and an iPod Touch Classic for good measure. This only seems like where the natural progression will lead over time...

It wont be called ipod touch classic, as it will replace the classic with an entire new product. Perhaps the name change last year was a sign? I can see the clip and may be the nano names...

the rumor last week for multicolored nanos and with this one seems they are making it look more like a zune..

I dont mind, as long as they put in the zunes features,. but better and multi touch.

i think if theres a wheel, then theres no multi-touch screen. The screen would defeat the purpose of having a wheel no, cause you could easily program a wheel control to pop up on the screen if it were multitouch. So i'm gonna have to debunk any wheel + touch screen theories.

remember there was a patent a while ago for a device with a screen on the front and buttons on the back! I'd say the chance for that happening is rare, since its kinda awkward, but who knows!?

Either way though, sounds good for all the people in the market for a Nano! I hated the fat nano! 1st & 2nd Gen FTW!

I love my Phattie. Sorry to see them get bigger. Video is pretty sweet on the current nano.

might be better on this one. if its bulid right..

"URGH, OMG apple, like keeps changing its crap, and like, um... I want them to to, you know,ah huh go back to 2 year old technolgoy because, its like the best type there is"

whats worng with the current line up? the new nanos are simple. Come in the same sizes as the 2ed gen just added video. You dont have to have video on them you know ;)

agreed. The absolute best iPod ever introduced.

for 2005/2006.

I find the new nanos lot more thinner and better quality. Sure its small, but people wanted video so they added it. if you dont, well, dont put video on.. simple as that
