There's a lot of speculation... some major possibilities include:
Things quite likely to happen, albeit not in the next month:
- The MBP will transition to future iterations of various aspects of the Core architecture, such as possibly a Penryn chip -- this is some time away yet.
- Apple has promised LED backlighting across the board, so this is something small that is yet to happen for all MBPs -- timing unknown.
- (I could be wrong on this one) If HDCP isn't yet implemented on the MBP, I would suspect it will be fairly soon -- timing unknown
- Blu-Ray or possibly HD-DVD when the dust settles -- probably some time away yet, since Apple doesn't seem to want to participate in the format war directly.
Some things that are possible but somewhat less likely:
- That the quad-core penryn-based chip promised next year might somehow find its way into a MBP (too much power consumption) -- end of 08 at the earliest
- It's pretty widely expected that ultimately, at some point, the MBP lid will be revised to use the mag latch in the Macbook, since this is one of the few things about the Macbook design about which almost no one bitches -- timing unknown
- It's also expected that Apple will incorporate design elements seen in the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iMac into the notebooks, but there's less agreement on what and when -- timing unknown
- Then we get on to wilder stuff like a multitouch trackpad -- timing also unknown.
The stuff I'd see as reasonably possible by January on that list are the LED backlight, a speed bump, and maybe HDCP.
