I'm also assuming Apple has a nice business arrangement with them, that might make it difficult to get out of. I'm just conjecturing on that but business relationships are usually built upon contracts.

Sure is, and if the rumor I read a few months back that Apple and AMD are designing a SOC together is true, well then Apple might not want to or even can switch to nvidia.

If it were the case, I would probably consider pulling the trigger on my 5k iMac early (right now looking at the 2017 refresh). Going back a few posts, I too wish Apple would sell a tower that was easily modified. It's kind of funny looking at Macs from the 90s where the ability for the owner to add expansion cards, etc. was a major selling point of the system. Though professional systems did cost a lot more back then. When you can buy a top of the line system for $2k compared to the $5k in the 90s, you don't have as many people screaming to be able to put their own cards in.

Ahh well, Apple has me and I will have to upgrade from my 2012 Mac mini sooner rather than later since I'd like to move to a 4k+ screen

I don't see Apple ever using Nvidia again. Nvidia pushes their proprietary Cuda, whereas AMD is all in on OpenCL.

since when ? yes they prefer OpenCl but not bad chips, overheating products etc
since 680mx and 780m were 2 years on nvidia, Apple is not fixed for amd

Apple has made overheating products ever since they started... jajaja
Plus, making money is a lot more important than "bad chips".
