They’re bound to change something so you have to buy a new case.

The counterpoint is that keeping the iPads compatible with the existing Smart Keyboard mean that Apple needs to only manufacture and stock one model of keyboard to serve all their iPad lines.

We have been through this before (you and me).
Scientific testing is really not needed. You just take them to your hands and you immediately know which one flexes more without any significant force. Hence why I didn't get one yet.
I have high hopes that this 2021 model will use stronger aluminium and I can finally get the Pro. I was so ready last year but with the fiasco release I've decided that I won't support them with my money for such nonsense release with tech from 2018.
Now, I'm so ready and I hope they are too. :)

The sides of the 2017 were curved and the arc provided some degree of resistance that the flat sides Apple’s keen on now will never provide. And, because no one has done any scientific testing, the ONLY way you’ll know if it’s “more durable enough” is to actually take it through YOUR specific use cases.

They currently have 5 different screen sizes for the iPad. It would be impossible to make one keyboard case that fits all those devices.

I hope they do keep the 11” & 12.9” similar to such an extent that we don’t have to go out and spend another €400 on a new keyboard case.

Flexing isn’t the problem, though. Flexing is warping or bending and reverting back to the original shape. It’s a desired trait for many rigid systems because it allows them to accept and distribute energy without being destroyed. A system that doesn’t flex is brittle and breaks more easily.

The problem for many is the point of deformation where the shape is permanently changed through the application of pressure. When an iPad Pro in a bag gets pressed against a book and comes out fine, that’s flexing. When it comes out bent, that’s deformation. And, no one knows how much pressure is required for deformation.

Well, we can be talking about terminology but the flexing is connected to strength. If 2020 model flexes easier than 2017 then that is a problem. (actually, the required force is a problem)

2017 (as someone pointed out) had different shape which also helped to reduce flexing and increase rigidity. 2020 model is flat which makes it easier to flex/bend.

As of now, the 2020 model is just too 'fragile' for me and I've seen enough issues to convince me to wait.
Now, if this 2021 model is indeed a bit thicker then that itself is a good news. Thicker model means better rigidity if all the rest remain the same. Now, hopefully Apple is going to use stronger aluminium and voila = we have perfect iPad.

I still have iPhone 6 and its still perfectly flat but that doesn't negate the fact that there was an issue with the structure that Apple later rectified with stronger class Aluminium. I simply want the same treatment for a device thats almost $2000CAD and its called PRO. Even in their marketing they show how the device is used out and about. No one wants to babysit such device. Apple improves this weakness and they get my money. I'm sure there are more people like me.

So here is to hoping that this problem is improved or eradicated in the next update.

That was me :) And, the 2021 model will also be flat 1mm thicker, but in other ways likely structurally similar to the 2020 iPad Pro. (It will still flex more than the curved sided iPad Pro)

The reports are that it’s thicker by 1mm which could be due to a larger battery with the shell being just as thin as previously. Also, that doesn’t remove the issue that the bands on the cellular version cut across the sides creating weak points. I hope it ends up being good enough for you, but no one is going to be able to tell you, before the purchase, that the way YOU expect to use it, it won’t bend.

I don't do cellular so I know that is ok.
Yeah, I know what you mean but still, I can't justify the purchase of 2020 or even before 2018. The issue was much bigger than I would like for a device that I plan to keep for years. My Air 2 served me (still does) well so I hope to get at least the same if not more out of this. I look after my devices very well and it will be mainly home usage so most likely non issue but Apple won't get my money for the 2018 or 2020 model. 2021 better shows some improvements otherwise I'll just get the Air (or nothing) :)

I just hope the existing 11" Smart Keyboard still fits the new Pro because I already picked one up for $99 on sale. It will either be an great investment, or a really stupid move, to buy a keyboard for a device that hasn't been released yet. Either way, I'm dying to find out...
If it is on sale, it usually means the next update will not be compatible with the current one.
