I expect iPad 2 to have higher res., faster CPU, more memory, and whatever bells and whistles apple decides to throw in.

Then you clearly don't understand Apple. Apple is not the bells n' whistles, spec sheet win, company.

In fact that is the opposite of the way Apple works. Apple never leads on the spec sheet. They excel in giving you only what you really need.

That doesn't explain the iPhone 4, does it?

Apple can - and does - bump specs. - where they make sense. Apple sees the game market exploding for them - faster CPUs, more ram, and a better display are almost a given.

Faster or dual CPUs - Either a faster a4 or an apple derived cortex a9 design

More ram - 512 Meg or 1 gig of ram

More flash ram - 64 seems enough, but if they put in a higher res display, then we'll see 128 gig.

Higher resolution - I'd guess 1280 x 960

Better battery life - if possible

USB ports - no way in hell, but I think we'll see SD

Hdmi output - lol

We will NOT Have any other resolution than a doubled one.
Apps would scale badly and it would screw over iPad 1 owners

Agreed! Therefore there will be no change in resolution til 2013, or 2012 if we get lucky.

Would love to see USB am waiting for ipad 2 pity Santa could not bring it. How am I suppose to hold on. Please make it January.

Apple wants to stay ahead of the curve - iPhone was stagnant at 480 x 320 and that gave android an "in" - apple needs to take advantage of the fact that they'll likely sell 40 million next year, by using economies of scale to get higher spec'ed parts at reasonable prices.

I expect iPad 2 to have higher res., faster CPU, more memory, and whatever bells and whistles apple decides to throw in.

Remember, with Apple likely ordering the production of over 40 million 2G iPads, that makes it very viable for the touchscreen manufacturer to offer 1280x768 or 1280x960 resolution at a very reasonable price, especially with the touchscreen manufacturers now having the experience in building touchscreens on a large scale. Besides, the higher resolution means easier-reading text, which makes the iPad far more viable as an e-book reader.

What are your thoughts on Apple's strategy to unveil a new iPad so close after Christmas? Isn't that just going to piss a lot of people off?

I wouldn't expect to see anything having to do with a new iPad until March/April 2011. Apple tends to like yearly cycles for this stuff (like the iPhone and iPod).

That is the nature of the electronics business. What you buy is outdated as soon as you buy it. Howeverm if it meets the need, does it matter? I still use my 4 year old 20" iMac and a tube tv.

I wonder how many of the average consumers that are buying iPads are in tune with Apple and their plans. If Joe goes into Target and sees the current one, he buys it and is happy. The forum fanbois and haters are aware, but that is not the norm.

Really wish they would. That's because it is going to be my first ipad. Can't wait !! Have become an Apple fan iPhone and iMac now trying to justify ipad. Don't care getting it as soon as new one comes out.

That might make sense if Apple hadn't released an iPad yet, but they have, and they have already chosen the resolution they are going standardize on for 2 or 3 years, and that is 1024x768.

Wishful thinking won't change that.

Well, more RAM is a given, considering the unfortunate decision to put only 256MB in the first-gen model. As for a faster CPU clock, I wouldn't bet on it. Battery life is everything to Jobs these days--he appears to believe that we have entered an era of computing where any contemporary CPU is 'fast enough.' If Samsung can help Apple design an A9-based all-in-one SoC that is a pin-compatible (drop-in) replacement for the current one, it could happen; I just wouldn't bet on a clock higher than 1.0 GHz.

GPS tracking chip and all the accelerometer stuff of the iPhone 4 is a given, as is micro-USB (it could be a dongle). A uniform-thickness design (mimicking the iPhone 4) and cameras out the wazoo are highly likely.

As for the screen, there is no way that Apple could reasonably change the resolution from 1024*768. In the past year, Apple has already thrown two screen resolution switches at developers--now apps have to support 320*480, 960*640 and 1024*768 pixel displays simultaneously. Wouldn't yet another aspect ratio and resolution piss developers off even more.

Apple would never release a new product and make hundreds of people line up outside in the cold. January, February, March, April is a no-go.

May is the earliest you might get iPad 2.

Mark my words.

However, you're forgetting that Apple chose the 1024x768 resolution on its touchscreen for another reason: cost. Going beyond a 1024x768 resolution touchscreen would have made the iPad just too expensive for the price point Jobs wanted for the device at the time.

But now that production costs with suppliers are probably lower, Apple could get reasonable pricing on 1280x768 or 1280x960 touchscreens for the 2G iPad. Going to a higher resolution--which will of course require an update to iOS 4.x--allows for better quality display graphics, better looking text, and native display of 720p HD video downloaded through the iTunes Store and copied to the iPad through iTunes.
I highly doubt they'll increase the resolution because that'd require developers supporting both iPad 1 and iPad 2, which means more work. If Apple does anything, they'll do what they did with the iPhone 4 and double the resolution -- it's seamless and requires little effort from developers.

Sure pixel doubling is easy. So that is what they went with on the iPhone. That doesn't work for the iPad as that panel would to costly in itself and on the parts to drive it.

There are other reasonably easy option before you get 4x the pixel count. 4 pixels could become 9. They could add yellow to each pixel. They could change to transmissive displays. Plus a number of other new display technologies. After all the rumor is for a new display tech not a resolution increase.

Add to that reading outdoors is the only traction a rival has gotton on them in the Market. Then deleting that would be a win for them.

WOW. A USB port. Will certainly be worth spending $700 on an upgrade!

Yeah because your old iPad will be instantly obsolete as soon as the new iPad is released. Nobody forces you to spend any money to upgrade, maybe there will be enough new features to warrant an upgrade for some people, maybe it will just be enough of an upgrade to get some new people to buy an iPad or maybe it will be a little extra incentive for those not yet willing to buy an iPad. Either way you don't have to spend $700 for a USB port. In fact you can buy the adapter for $30.
